Published: June 18, 2008

Greetings Again, Smittyheads!

This edition includes a sampling of the lesser-known, little things that are happening around town. And as we know, little things add up to the entire weave of our community's social fabric. All of them are worth checking out.

Also, don't forget to take the Smitty's Notes Annual Best of Winston-Salem survey, if you haven't already. The deadline is June 30, 2008 at midnight. The responses have been fabulous, and I look forward in sharing the details in the next edition.

I'm off to the mountains this week for a little R&R and to enjoy the summer solstice with an unobstructed view of the skies. Hope you'll take a moment to savor the longest day of the year, as well.

Now to the business at hand . . .

Brew Nerds is opening a second location downtown.

The coffee shop, Brew Nerds, which opened last fall at The Shoppes at Little Creek on Hanes Mall Boulevard, plans to open a second Winston-Salem location. It will open its doors on July 14 in the space formerly occupied by SIN Coffee Bar, at 305 West 4th Street.

The shop offers coffee, frozen drinks and other beverages, as well as snacks. Brew Nerds is owned by D.J. and Jennifer McKie, who also opened this past winter Kernel Kustard, a specialty popcorn and custard shop, also located at The Shoppes at Little Creek.

Diamondback Grill is host of the Crabondaza Seafood Celebration for the Summer Solstice Saturday, June 21, 2008 @ 5:30 p.m.

In celebration of the summer solstice, Diamondbak Grill is hosting – CRABONDANZA. It's their crabfest featuring soft shell crabs, jumbo crab legs, crabcakes, shrimp boil, peel-and-eat shrimp with Old Bay seasoning, corn on the cob and new potatoes with melted butter. You'll need lots of napkins for this one! If you're looking for something different to do for the weekend, this might be the spot. And let's not forget the beer. Green Drinks Monthly Meeting – Wednesday, June 25, 2008 @ Krankie's Coffee Bar @ 5:30 p.m.

FYI, every last Wednesday of the month in Winston-Salem, people who work in the environmental field meet up for a beer at informal sessions known as Green Drinks. It's a lively mixture of people from NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), academia, government and business. Come along and you'll be made to feel welcome. Just ask, "Are you Green, and they will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It's a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there's always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organizing network. These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals and had moments of serendipity. It's free. Krankie Coffee Bar is located at 211 East 3rd Street. For more information call 336-403-8840; e-mail Sarah Olsen at sarah@leaprealty.net or visit http://www.greendrinks.org

Winston-Salem Jaycee's Single Mingle – Thursday, June 26, 2008 @ 5:30 p.m.

The Winston-Salem Jaycee's Single Mingle is back in 2008. For more than five years, the Winston-Salem Jaycees have hosted this event to provide working professionals with a fun, laid back atmosphere to meet new people without the pressures of the bar scene, blind dates or Internet dating. This is a great opportunity for anyone newly transplanted to W-S or for anyone who simply wants to meet new people, have a fun evening out or kick off the weekend in style. Whether you're single and looking, or attached and looking for a fun night out with friends, Single Mingle is a great way to connect and build your social and business network in the Twin City.

The event will be held Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Buffalo Wild Wings located at 1045 Hanes Mall Boulevard. There is a $5 cover which entitles you to drink specials, free appetizers, speed dating (which for some of us is better than real dating), music, and other games and prizes. Speed Dating registration starts at 5p.m., The first round begins at 6 p.m. Mark you calendar now; this is a great way to spend Thursday night out, away from the summer heat and meet new friends to make plans for the weekend. Oh, and there's no Thirsty Thursday that night, so the Winston-Salem Jaycees Single Mingle is the place to be. Bubble-bration" @ Corpening Plaza - Friday, June 27, 2008

Now, I get some unusual event request for posting in Smitty's Notes. This is the latest one which received my attention worth getting the word out. On Friday, June 27, 2008 there will be a "Bubble-bration" happening at Corpening Plaza starting at 1:00 p.m. Here's the deal. Take a break from your day, head down and blow bubbles with others in the community. You know. The soapy stuff in the bottle with the plastic rings. No joke.

The purpose is to bring out the inner child in us and have some good old fashion fun by blowing bubbles for those who enjoy the past time. The event is being coordinated by Guilherme Sa. It has been successful in other communities around the country and figured why not bring it to one of the social capital building hubs in the country which is Winston-Salem. The only rules are you have to bring your own bubbles bottles and you must want to have fun. That's it! I have found out recently there are a lot of closet bubbles fans out there. Time to come out kids and adults. Corpening Plaza is located at First and Liberty Street below the BB&T Financial Center. Spread the word! For more information contact Guilherme Sa. at guilsa001@gmail.com or visit http://web.mac.com/samarco1/flier.jpg

Heavy Rebel Weekender to the Arts District - July 4, 5 and 6, 2008

It wouldn't be a Fourth of July week without the wicked return of Heavy Rebel Weekender to the Arts District. Now in its eighth year, the three-day musical event will be held July 4, 5 and 6, 2008 with more than 70 groups playing everything including rock 'n' roll, punk, rockabilly, country and swing. It is arguably the most interesting downtown event of the year. The festival theme highlights the 1950s era, in which James Dean made rebellion tragically hip, and spawned an entire trend in pop culture.

On tap for the weekend are vendors, vintage clothing, artists selling original creations, and sculptures from old car parts. One of the main attractions is the Saturday Custom Car and Bike Show on Trade Street, which features custom, restored and classic vehicles made prior to 1968. One rule: No Ford Mustangs or Chevy Cameros are allowed unless they are downright cool in appearance—and the organizers' emphasize "really cool". Get it? For the out-of-the ordinary, there is the popular Mud Wrestling Contest, which has moved up from Jell-O in previous years, a Beer-Guzzlin'-in-60-Seconds Contest and a Banana Puddin'-Eating Contest. Scary! Full refreshments will be provided during the entire event near the Millennium Center. Tickets for the event are $70 (3-day pass) and $35 (a single day pass) in advance, $90 (3-day pass) and $35 (a single day pass) the day of the event; they can be purchased in advance at the Web site and at the door. The Millennium Center is located 101 West Fifth Street. For visuals, visit http://www.heavyrebel.net
