Coffee nerds have a new choice for java in downtown Winston-Salem.
Brew Nerds will replace Sin Coffee Bar on July 14 at 305 W. Fourth St. in the Chatham Building.
This will be the second location for Brew Nerds in Winston-Salem. The coffeehouse is run by DJ McKie, and his wife, Jennifer.
The couple owns the Brew Nerds and Kernel Kustard on Hanes Mall Boulevard at Shoppes on Little Creek -- the first restaurant from the couple's development group, Focus Tank.
A coffee shop has occupied the Sin Coffee Bar space since February 2001, when Gordon Sparber opened Ollie's coffee shop. Adam and Christina Sin opened Sin there in 2004.
In the spring of 2007, WRCP Properties LLC became the majority owner and has run the business since then. WRCP Properties, which is run by Rence Callahan and his business partners at Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce architectural firm, own the Chatham Building.
Callahan said that Brew Nerds recently approached WRCP about taking over the bar.
"I think that all the Sin customers will be pleasantly surprised that the quality of the beverage will be equal to what we've been providing at Sin and the selections will be increased," Callahan said.
At Brew Nerds, coffee beans are micro-roasted in small batches on-site.
"Producing the perfect brew is more than just a hobby for me," DJ McKie said. "It is a mission. In a country where Americans consume 400 million cups of coffee each day, Brew Nerds is dedicated to serving the absolute best coffee and specialty beverages."
The employees, or staff nerds, will wear classic nerd attire -- trucker hats, short black pants and white socks.
In addition to coffee, Brew Nerds will offer frozen and other hot beverages, as well as treats such as fresh-baked cinnamon rolls and Wedgies, which are large slices of bread toasted and topped with butter and a choice of nutella, peanut butter, jams, cinnamon sugar, banana slices and cream-cheese icing.
Brew Nerds will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.
Jennifer McKie said she expects Sin to remain open until the end of this month, as Brew Nerds will start renovations July 1. During the two weeks that the shop is closed, Brew Nerds will provide free drip coffee in the atrium of the Chatham Building, right outside the Sin space.
Brew Nerds wants to retain the two employees who work at Sin.
"We really want to keep familiar faces there," Jennifer McKie said, "and they've done such a good job serving their customers that we are hoping to bring them on board with us."
