Mother faces charge in infant's death

BOONE -- A mother has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the heat-related death of her 9-month-old daughter who had been left in a vehicle May 29, the Watauga County Sheriff's Office said yesterday.
A grand jury met Monday and issued an indictment for Octavia Miller's mother, Kayla Ernestine Ruppard, 20, of 310 High Knolls Lane, Deep Gap, authorities said. She was taken before a magistrate and given a $15,000 bond. Her trial date is July 24.
Officers responded on May 29 to a house on Morning Dove Lane after a 911 caller said that the baby had stopped breathing, according to a sheriff's report.
The high temperature that afternoon was 73, according to the National Weather Service.
Two adults and five children were burned out of their home yesterday morning by a fire caused by food left unattended on a stove, the Winston-Salem Fire Department said.
The house on Hondo Drive is owned by Gregoria Martinez.
Damage to the building was estimated at $104,000, and the damage to contents was estimated at $20,000.
No one was injured.
The Red Cross is helping the family find temporary housing.
LEXINGTON -- A man died after his motorcycle crashed into a tractor-trailer and caught fire yesterday morning, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
The accident happened at 11:30 on N.C. 8, less than a mile south of Lexington.
Gary Lamont Bellamy, 30, of 195 Bill Lohr Road in Lexington was driving a 2004 Honda south on N.C. 8 when he lost control and slid under the tractor-trailer.
Bellamy was pronounced dead at the scene
The tractor-trailer was driven by Larry Donal, 48, of Alabama. He was not injured, the highway patrol said. No charges have been filed.
LEXINGTON -- A man was arrested Tuesday after breaking into a home and choking a woman, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said.
Sheriff's deputies and detectives responded to a report of a break-in at a house on East Center Street Extension shortly after 12:50 p.m. A mother and her two teenage daughters were in the house at the time.
The man choked the mother until she was unconscious, and then one of the daughters confronted him with a broom. Another daughter used a knife to defend her mother, the sheriff's office said. All three women suffered minor injuries.
William Junior Oxendine, 35, of 1213 E. Center St. Ext., was arrested and charged with felony breaking and entering, felony assault by strangulation, three counts of second-degree kidnapping, and two counts of misdemeanor assault on a female. He was in the Davidson County Jail with bond set at $100,000.
