North Carolina teammates Tim Fedroff and Tim Federowicz were selected in the seventh round yesterday, and three Appalachian State players and several players with ties to area high schools also were among those selected on Day 2 of major-league baseball's amateur draft.

Fedroff, an outfielder and pitcher, went to the Cleveland Indians as the 231st pick, and Federowicz, a catcher, went to the Boston Red Sox with the next pick.

Also, pitcher D.J. Mitchell of Clemson, who played high-school ball at North Forsyth, went to the New York Yankees in Round 10; outfielder David Thomas of Catawba, a former Ledford High star, went to the Oakland Athletics in Round 14; and the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted right-handed pitcher Carl Webster out of McMichael High.

For Appalachian State, outfielder David Rubinstein was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round, and outfielder Jason Rook and pitcher Garrett Sherrill went in the 12th round, with the Baltimore Orioles taking Rook and the Milwaukee Brewers taking Sherrill. It was the first time in program history that three Appalachian players were drafted, and the three are ASU's first draft picks since 1996.

Also, Nick Conaway, who pitched at South Stokes and then at Oklahoma last season, went to the San Diego Padres in Round 23; the Yankees took shortstop Garrison Lassiter of West Forsyth -- who signed with North Carolina last fall -- in the 27th round; and the Florida Marlins took center fielder Shane Mattison, who played at East Forsyth and recently finished his career at UNC Asheville, in Round 28.
