New Southern doesn't mean green-bean casserole. Shrimp etouffe, lamb and the whole kit and caboodle -- really, like trout stuffed with greens, tomatoes and okra. You can order half-portions of most entrees-- less food and less money.

5:30-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Meta's Restaurant

102 W. Third St. Phone: 750-0811. $. NS.

Southern-comfort self-serve cafeteria (but not a chain). Grab your tray, get in line and choose from beef ribs, excellent fried chicken, baked salmon, meatloaf, mac and cheese, cobbler, and collard, turnip and mustard greens....

11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday; noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Lighthouse Restaurant

905 Burke St.

Phone: 724-9619. $. BW. NS.

This is the kind of neighborhood institution where everyone -- career wait staff, cooks, the owner -- will know your name if you come with any regularity. It's standard greasy-spoon fare, but served with love.

6 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Zaytoon

301 N. Elm St., Greensboro

Phone: 336-373-0211. $. NS.

There's no refreshment quite like this informal Mediterranean cafe's spicy red peppers stuffed with almonds and goat cheese, or its lemonade, perfumed with lemon oil and orange-blossom water. The bad news is that Zaytoon is open only on weekdays.

9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Century Kitchen

2133 Flint Hill Road, East Bend.

Some delicious choices -- mole-braised pork tenderloin, scallops with seasame bok choy -- among the typical offerings of filet mignon and salmon at the resident restaurant of the Yadkin Valley's Flint Hill Vineyards. Menu is very small and changes often.

5-9:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; open noon to 3 p.m. for Sunday brunch once a month.

The Old Fourth Street Filling Station

871 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 724-7600. $$. ABC. S/NS.

The best part about this renovated old gas station is that it is a good place to sit in the sun with a glass of wine. Big salads, sandwiches, wraps, pizza, pasta and daily lunch specials.

10 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday; 11 p.m.-9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

223 South Elm

223 S. Elm St., Greensboro.

Phone: 336-272-3331. $$$-$$$$. ABC. NS.

Is it Southern? Is it French? Or Asian? All three, when you try the tempura green tomato and pimento-cheese napoleon at this downtown Greensboro fusion restaurant and bar.

Lunch: 11:30 p.m.-2 p.m., Monday through Friday. Dinner: 5:30-9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 5:30-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Can it be that a strip-mall restaurant can really do Thai, Chinese and Japanese? So far, yes, and well. Terrific sushi and Mai Tais, those cheesy Polynesian cocktails served in green ceramic glasses shaped like bamboo.

Noon to 10 p.m. Sunday; 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Mellow Mushroom

314 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 245-2820. $-$$. ABC.

The calzones are so-so, but the parmesan-dusted pies are a treat. Tons of toppings, from tempeh to feta, and 30-plus beers on tap to wash it down.

11 a.m. -10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Thursday; 11 a.m.-midnight Friday and Saturday.
