Published: July 29, 2008

John Daly, a two-time major winner, has accepted a sponsor's exemption and will play in the Wyndham Championship.

Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open.

Daly joins a Wyndham Championship field that already includes defending champion Brandt Snedeker, Vijay Singh, two-time winners Davis Love, III and Rocco Mediate, Tim Clark, Carl Pettersson, Lucas Glover, David Toms, David Duval and 2007 British Amateur champion Drew Weaver.

Daly reached No. 23 in the Official World Golf Rankings late in the 2005 season; it was the highest world ranking of his career.

"We are very happy that John Daly has accepted our exemption," tournament director Mark Brazil said.

"John is always a crowd favorite when he plays our tournament. We welcome him back and wish him the best of luck."

The Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 11-17 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro.

■ Golfer Chris Wood turned pro yesterday, just more than a week after finishing as the highest-placed amateur at the British Open. Wood, 20, tied for fifth with Jim Furyk, finishing seven shots behind winner Padraig Harrington. Wood signed with the International Sports Management group and will receive invitations to European Tour events.

Basketball

■ Three former Appalachian State basketball players -- Jeremy Clayton, Doug McLaughin-Williams and Donte Minter -- have signed professional contracts with European teams.

Clayton will play for Korhait in Finland, McLaughlin-Williams will play for the Sheffield Arrows in England, and Minter will play for Sdent BBC Nyon in Switzerland.

Clayton finished his career last season as ASU's all-time leading shot-blocker (220); McLaughlin-Williams had 598 points with 400 rebounds in his college career; and Minter 13.9 points and six rebounds last season.

■ N.C. State landed one of its top targets in the Class of 2009 when guard Lorenzo Brown of Roswell, Ga., committed over the weekend, The Charlotte Observer reported yesterday.

Brown (6-5, 195) will be able to play point guard and shooting guard at State, said his high-school coach, Allen Whitehart of Centennial High. Brown averaged 25 points, eight rebounds and eight assists last season and is rated the 29th-best prospect in his class by scout.com.

Brown is N.C. State's second commitment for the next recruiting class, joining Scott Wood, a shooting guard from Marion, Ind.

■ Guard Royal Ivey signed a multiyear contract with the Philadelphia 76ers yesterday.

Ivey has averaged 4 points, 1.5 assists, 1.3 rebounds and 14.3 minutes in 263 games over four seasons in the NBA. A second-round pick by Atlanta in 2004, he has played three seasons in Atlanta and one in Milwaukee.

■ The Toronto Raptors signed free-agent guard Will Solomon yesterday.

Solomon, 30, played the past two seasons in Istanbul, Turkey, for Fenerbahce Ulker and averaged 17.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.3 steals in 13 regular-season games last season. He was drafted out of Clemson in 2001 by the Vancouver Grizzlies and played in 62 games with the club in 2001-02. He has played overseas since.

Hockey

■ Defenseman Jay Bouwmeester agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Florida Panthers yesterday, one day before a scheduled salary arbitration. Bouwmeester will make between $4 million and $5 million next season, nearly doubling his salary, but the sides couldn't agree on a long-term deal that the Panthers wanted.

Bouwmeester scored a career-high 15 goals last season, tied for sixth among NHL defensemen. He played all 82 games for the third straight year and logged 2,252 minutes, by far the most in the NHL.

Miscellaneous

■ Connor Leonard pitched a 1-hitter, and A.J. Gallo, Graham Morton and Leonard hit consecutive home runs Saturday as Northwest Forsyth American Little League defeated Weddington National 7-0 to win the state title in the 10-11-year-olds division.

Morton singled in two runs in a three-run first, and then Northwest broke the game open with the home-run barrage in the third.

■ The fourth leg of the Giordana Cycling Classic will be tonight in Mocksville, and the nine-stage criterium series will wrap up Sunday with the Hanes Park Classic in Winston-Salem. ■ The Indy Racing League will not return to Nashville Superspeedway after efforts to negotiate an agreement for a 2009 race failed.

The IndyCar series had raced at the superspeedway the past eight years, including July 12 when Scott Dixon won a rain-shortened race.

The Edmonton Sun reported Sunday that Toronto would replace Nashville on next season's 18-race schedule.
