RALEIGH
Legislation raising the minimum age for a child to ride in a pickup truck bed in North Carolina is still standing.
The Senate voted 22-21 yesterday in favor of raising the age from 12 to 16 and removing an exemption for children who live in 32 rural counties.
Motorists who violated the law could be fined $25. The new limits still wouldn't apply if an adult sits with the child.
Scotland County Sen. Bill Purcell said too many children are still being injured or dying under the current law. But Senate Republican Leader Phil Berger said the bill only would take more responsibility for raising children away from adults.
A final Senate vote is expected today. The House already has approved a version of the bill.
