Swimming lessons and sports camps are great ways to fill the summer days. This summer, the West Forsyth Family YMCA is offering a different sports camp each week, and swimming for everyone.
A majority of the camps are outdoors, campers do have an opportunity to come inside and have activities in the gym.
The main goal of all the camps is to have fun while adding skill development and knowledge of the sport. A parent said recently, "The Charlene Curtis Basketball Camp helped my daughter become more excited about playing basketball".
The John Thompson Basketball Camp is being held this week. Lacrosse Camp with Jim O'Neil, the head lacrosse coach at Bishop McGuiness High School, will be held July 14-18.
Cheerleading camp with Joevanne Estrada, the head varsity cheerleading coach at Winston Salem State University, will be July 21-25.
Soccer Camp will be Aug. 4-8. Instruction will be provided by the Forbush High School men's and women's soccer staff. the Chuck McCracken Volleyball Camp will be held this same week.
The last week of the Summer Sports Camp , which is new this year, is sure to be a blast. This is an "All Sports Camp" and is being held Aug. 11-15.
Each day a different sport will be played. This camp is offered to children 4 and older. Each sports camp will run for four hours -- 8 a.m. until noon or 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Each child will receive a Y Sports Camp T-shirt. Most Camps start at age 6.
Children enrolled in the summer child-care program through the West Forsyth Family YMCA may participate in these camps as part of their day as well.
If a child would rather be in the pool than on the soccer field, the YMCA has programs for them.
Along with traditional two-week and four-week indoor swimming lessons, the YMCA is offering swimming lessons at Tanglewood Pool in the morning before it is open to the public. These lessons are two-week sessions held Monday through Thursday.
Preschool age is held from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 10 11 a.m. Youth age is held from 10 to 10:45.
The Wahoo swim team is also a great asset of the YMCA. This program is designed to introduce members who are interested in exploring the sport of competitive swimming and improving their level of fitness.
Practice for the Wahoos is also at Tanglewood Park on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The team has small meets with other YMCAs in the area. A parent said, "The Wahoo Swim Team has helped my child develop her strokes, provided a great form of exercise for her and given her something to do in the mornings this summer."
