Murphy's Lunch

207 W. Third St.

Phone: 723-5378. $. S.

There's nothing fancy about this pure Southern lunch counter. It's thick with regulars, and the iced tea is so sweet it'll make your teeth ache. Choices change daily; come Tuesday and Thursday for mighty good fried chicken.

6 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Miss Annie's

3064 Healy Drive.

Phone: 774-0922. $$$. BW. NS.

Small and romantic, this unlikely strip-mall restaurant serves up French and Caribbean fare without the schmaltz. Jerked chicken, cod fritters, rice and beans, creme brulee.

Dinner: 5:30-9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 5:30-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Marshall Street Smokehouse

924 S. Marshall St.

Phone: 723-0430. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Steaks smoldered over hickory. Baby back ribs, brisket, pork chops, chili…. Try the smoky barbecue chicken wings with creamy Gorgonzola dressing.

Open at 5-10 p.m. daily.

Salem Kitchen Cafe

126 S. Main St., Kernersville.

Phone: 992-9902. $$. BW. NS.

This Winston-Salem catering company now has an eat-in cafe in downtown Kernersville, serving sandwiches, desserts, soups, salads and Moravian Chicken Pie … with a side order of local art on the walls.

11 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

O'Brien's Deli

4001-C Country Club Road.

Phone: 765-9722. $. NS.

One word: Reuben! This is the real deal New York deli, with egg creams, homemade German potato salad and Carnegie Deli cheesecake.

9 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday;10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday to Friday; 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

Xia

134 N. Spruce St.

Phone: 723-1400. $$. ABC. NS.

bellbellbell Reviewed April 6, 2006.

"Asian fusion" is what Xia is going for -- it's not quite that innovative, but still helps close a huge gap in the quality of Asian restaurants in Winston-Salem. Reasonably-priced lunch specials, and it's gorgeous, too, like eating in a lacquered jewelry box.

11 a.m. -10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Juice Shop

308 S. Stratford Road.

Phone: 721-0444. $. NS.

Despite the name, your only choices here are super-fresh smoothies, perhaps doctored with some nutritional supplement. They're big, though, enough to make a fresh-tasting liquid meal, especially during summer swelter.

11 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday; 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.

Rim

219A S. Elm St., Greensboro.

Phone: (336) 230-2055. $$-$$$. ABC. NS.

Reviewed Feb. 28, 2008.

Small plates with fun twists with a stronger Spanish influence than other local interpretations of tapas, such as Serrano ham croquettes with basil, fried anchovies with piquillo peppers and shaved garlic. Even tiny desserts are simple but clever here.

11 a.m.-11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

West End Cafe

926 W. Fourth St.

Phone: 723-4774. $$. ABC. S/NS.

Reviewed Feb. 14, 2008.

Lunch is king at this neighborhood cafe, and you can get the same salads, sandwiches and burgers at dinner, but consider the more adventuresome dinner specials, such as shrimp ceviche tostadas, and sauteed trout over a blue crab corn cake.

11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Friday; Noon to 10 p.m. Saturday

Turmeric

3088 Healy Drive.

Phone: 794-8282. $$. S/NS. ABC.

Reviewed Sept. 20, 2007.

Come here to feast on good versions of the usual Indian favorites, such as spicy butter chicken and lamb saag, but also more hard-to-find fare. Dosas and uttapam are regional specialties from India's southern states.

Lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and until 3:30 p.m. on weekends. Dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until 10:30 p.m. on weekends.
