Winston-Salem police have identified the worker who was killed Saturday morning when he fell into the augers of a mulch spreader.
Thomas Guy Rayle, 45, of 919 Hockett Dairy Road in Randleman was working at a job site at 4125 N. Patterson Ave. for a landscape-contracting company when he fell into the hopper on the back of a truck that dispenses mulch.
Officials of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were notified and were at the scene.
Rayle's body was taken to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
The 4100 block of North Patterson Avenue was closed for about three hours during the investigation.
SPRUCE PINE -- Residents of an area in Spruce Pine returned to their homes yesterday morning after a plant fire forced them to leave in the early morning hours.
A dispatcher for the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office said that residents were allowed to return home around 9:30 a.m.
The Unimin Corporation Quartz/Feldspar Plant in Spruce Pine suffered "substantial" damage in the fire, which started around 11 p.m. Saturday, according to a company press release.
Plant manager Doug Myers said that there were no injuries at the plant, which normally runs only on weekdays.
Officials told people who lived within four miles of the plant to evacuate their homes because of the fire. Fire departments from six counties sent crews to help put it out.
Officials said that the fire appeared to be contained as of 5 a.m. but residents weren't given the all-clear to go home until later in the morning.
Myers said that the cause of the fire has not been determined.
He said that the fire did not pose a danger to the surrounding area, but air-quality tests were being conducted.
Spruce Pine is about 50 miles northeast of Asheville.
The Unimin site, which includes the plant, a mine, laboratories and an office building, employs 92 people, according to a company press release. The plant itself employs 46 people.
