■ North Korean leader Kim Jong Il inspected an air-force unit, praising the airmen for their diligence and urging them to remain disciplined in the face of enemy "aggression," state-run media reported yesterday. The dispatch is the latest from Pyongyang in recent weeks portraying Kim as busy and active. South Korean and U.S. officials say Kim, 66, suffered a stroke in August. North Korea, however, denies he was ever ill. Kim toured air-force facilities and observed training, accompanied by Col. Gen. Ri Pyong Chol, commander of the air force, and military officials from Unit 1016, the state-run Korean Central News Agency said in a report monitored in Seoul.
■ The first lady of Ukraine says she wants to develop cooperation between hospitals in her country and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Kateryna Yushchenko toured the medical center's Children's Hospital yesterday. The wife of Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko says she wants to use the development of the medical center's planned Children's Hospital as a model for hospitals in her country. She was given a tour of the hospital's intensive-care unit and emergency departments by Dr. Andrew Urbach, the center's medical director of clinical excellence and service. Cancer is a major concern in Ukraine since the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear-power plant.
■ During an interview with Elton John for the debut of his new Sundance Channel show Spectacle, Elvis Costello didn't ask about stage costumes, boyfriends or "Island Girl." Instead, the conversation turned to Laura Nyro, Leon Russell and David Ackles. The two men closed the show, which airs Wednesday at 9 p.m., performing the obscure singer-songwriter Ackles' "Down River." "For all of (Elton John's) successes, people don't realize that he's a great fan of music," Costello said. "They assume that he's this flamboyant guy who has hit records. They don't know that it's grounded in a great love and tremendous knowledge about music."
■ Puerto Rican actress Roselyn Sanchez has gotten married at a historic San Juan fort in front of 250 guests that included Eva Longoria Parker. Sanchez and actor Eric Winter arrived Saturday at the San Cristobal fort in a white Mercedes-Benz. Guests also included actor Amaury Nolasco and Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila and his family.
■ Helena Wolinska, 89, of pneumonia, in England. She was a communist-era prosecutor charged in Poland with the wrongful prosecution of the nation's World War II heroes. She had been accused of fabricating charges against some of the country's underground leaders. She was also charged with the wrongful arrest of 14 others who refused to recognize communist rule.
