IN EDUCATION

□ The Iota Class recently graduated from the Triad Community Kitchen program. The program is operated by Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina. Since the Triad Community Kitchen program began 108 people have graduated from it.

□ Darren Zhu of Winston-Salem, a member of the Class of 2009 at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, is a semifinalist in the 2008-09 Siemans Competition in Math, Science and Technology. The competition is considered the nation's pre-eminent scholastic academic challenge, drawing hundreds of students from across America to compete as individuals or as teams of two or three.

Zhu is the son of Jian-Ming Zhu and Jianya Feng.

IN THE MILITARY

Army Reserve Pfc. Christopher J. Barrett has graduated from Basic Combat training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission and received instruction and training exercises in drill and ceremonies, Army history, core values and traditions, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, rifle marksmanship, weapons use, map reading and land navigation, foot marches, armed and unarmed combat, and field maneuvers and tactics.

He is the son of Johnny and Marriete Barrett of Kernersville and a 2008 graduate of East Forsyth High School.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Christina D. Beal, along with more than 6,000 Marines and sailors of the Iwo Jima Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG), and embarked 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, N.C., are currently deployed to the Navy's 5th and 6th Fleet area of operations in support of Maritime Security Operations and the Global War on Terror.

Rear Admiral Kendall Card, ESG 3 commander, along with Col. Mark J. Desens, 26th MEU commanding officer, visited MEU Marines during training scenarios including military operations in urban terrain and weapons ranges. Card, a Naval aviator, had the opportunity to fly a Marine CH-46E Sea Knight helicopter and have meals, ready-to-eat with the MEU's command staff.

Beal is the daughter of Judy Lecompte of Pfafftown, and a 2004 graduate of North Forsyth High School. She joined the Navy in February 2005.

Air Force Airman Brandon C. Williams has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

During the six weeks of training, the Williams studied the Air Force mission, organization, core values, and military

customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches, and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises, and special training in human relations.

In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Williams is the son of Wesley Williams of Winston-Salem and is a 2008 graduate of Reagan High School.

IN SCOUTING

Trent Blevins, a member of Boy Scout Troop 770, presented his Eagle Scout Project at Samaritan Ministries on Nov. 20. He presented 100 backpacks filled with such items as socks, toiletries, flashlights and city bus passes to guests at Samaritan Inn.

Blevins is a junior at Reagan High School and began his Eagle Scout Project with the idea to help the homeless and needy in the community. His leadership and dedication to the project are evident in the cash and in-kind donations he obtained.

Blevins got donations for the project from local groups. The Wal-Mart on Hanes Mall Boulevard contributed $500 through its Community Grant program. First Christian Church of Winston-Salem also provided financial support to the project. He held several fundraisers with his troop that included a flower bulb sale, and a bake sale through the Reagan High School FCCLA club. In total, he raised $1,500 in cash contributions, which paid for the backpacks, 200 Winston-Salem Transit Authority bus passes, and a donation to Samaritan Ministries.

IN OTHER AREAS

□ The winners of the East Bend Public Library Building Committee raffle were drawn Nov. 8. Henry Gray Bowman won first place and received two limited-edition wildlife prints by Jeff Stans. Vergie Mathis and Peyton Eldridge each won a $100 Wilco Hess card. Winanne Brown won a limited-edition wildlife print by R.J. McDonald.

Bill Holmes, a former reporter and editor for the Winston-Salem Journal, was the featured speaker at the 10th annual Brooks Scholars Celebration dinner. The dinner was held Nov. 20 at the Radisson Hotel in Research Triangle Park. The Brooks scholarships were established by Aubrey Lee Brooks in 1955. Each year they provide substantial assistance for 17 graduating seniors from 14 counties, including Forsyth, Stokes and Surry, to attend N.C. State University, UNC Chapel Hill or UNC Greensboro. Holmes was a Brooks Scholar who graduated from North Surry High School and N.C. State University. He is the director of communications for Rep. Joe Hackney, the speaker of the House in the N.C. General Assembly.
