When large companies get into financial trouble they look for a suitor in the form of a merger. Why not merge North and South Carolina and call it Carolina?
We could rid ourselves of huge numbers of duplicate staff and redundant departments. Use Columbia as the capitol and most of its governmental staff to run the new state, as they have a proven track record of business-friendly attitudes and a frugal budgeting history. The amount of money saved would be huge and would benefit all citizens.

It's a shame that grown adults have to be especially careful of how they present themselves in the eyes of young people, but that's a burden our educators must, for obvious reasons, bear, especially on the Internet ("WS/FC adopts conduct guidelines," Nov. 26). It would be even more of a shame if they were prohibited from any online contact with students -- the Internet is a valuable tool for education and communication. The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Board of Education seems to be making wise decisions about the delineation between adult freedom and the responsibilities of being role models.
Every now and then we hear about a bad apple among our educators, but for the most part, they're a very trustworthy bunch who deserves our respect and support.

It's time to tell people that they cannot be "pro-life" and "pro-choice" at the same time.
Catholics like Vice President-elect Joe Biden who say they are pro-life but vote for legislation favoring abortion can be compared to people who are against slavery, but who will allow other people to have slaves (if their conscience tells them it's OK).
This mentality means that there is no difference between an unborn child and a slave -- neither is considered to have rights. Both are considered "property" to be dispatched at the whim of those who "own" them.
It's also time to get rid of the word "choice." Post-abortion research like that done by the Elliot Institute (www.afterabortion.org) verifies that many women do not see their abortion as a choice. Animals caught in a trap will chew their leg off to get out of the trap. So it is with many women who go to abortion clinics.
