FREDERICK, Md.

Clutch hits by Sergio Miranda and Adam Ricks in the top of the ninth helped give Winston-Salem its 70th win of the season and win No. 41 in second half last night, 5-3 over the Frederick Keys. The rally came one night after the Warthogs clinched their first playoff berth since 2005.

With the game tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Ronnie Gaines led off the inning with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Estee Harris. Miranda then hit a high fly to right that was lost by right fielder Brandon Tripp of Frederick. Tripp appeared to be camped under the ball, but it bounced behind him and over the wall for an RBI ground-rule double.

Ricks followed with a bloop single that scoring Miranda and put the Warthogs up 5-3.

Matt Zaleski (7-2) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Winston-Salem (41-27).

Warthogs starter Clevelan Santeliz tied his longest outing of the season, pitching seven innings and allowing three runs on five hits and striking out six.

Keys starter Tim Bascom also pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Kenny Moreland (0-1) took the loss for Fredrick in his Carolina League debut.

After a scoreless first inning, Winston-Salem manufactured a run in the second when Gaines drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on a Harris double.

Frederick responded immediately off Santeliz when Tripp doubled and Chris Amador hit his ninth homer of the season, putting the Keys on top 2-1.

The lead didn't last long. Dale Mollenhauer of the Warthogs led off the third with a double, then scored on a double by C.J. Retherford. Retherford later scored on a one-out RBI groundout by Salvador Sanchez to give Winston-Salem a 3-2 lead.

Mollenhauer went 2 for 4, raising his average from .238 to .256 over the past three games. He also hit a sharp liner in the seventh, but second baseman Miguel Abreu made a diving stop.

Frederick got to Santeliz again in the sixth when Brandon Snyder hit his 13th home run of the season over the wall in center, tying the game 3-3.

Game three of this four-game regular-season finale is scheduled for 6:05 tonight at Harry Grove Stadium. The Warthogs will send right-hander Jacob Rasner (5-7, 3.55 ERA) to the mound. He will be opposed by right-hander Kyle Schmidt (4-4, 3.51 ERA).
