FREDERICK, Md.

The Winston-Salem Warthogs clinched a Carolina League second-half playoff berth with a 12-4 victory against the Frederick Keys last night at Harry Grove Stadium.

The Warthogs' offense exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning on the way to their 14th win in the past 17 games and first postseason berth since 2005.

Greg Paiml finished with three hits and was a single shy of hitting for the cycle. Francisco Hernandez drove in a season-high five runs, including a three-run homer in the decisive eighth. The Warthogs had 14 hits.

The Warthogs took control early, scoring two runs in the first off starter Pedro Beato of the Keys. Joe Persichina began the rally with a one-out triple and scored on John Shelby's double.

After Brett Bonvechio walked, Salvador Sanchez singled home Shelby to put the Warthogs ahead 2-0. The Warthogs added to their lead in the second when Paiml led off the inning with a homer.

Frederick tied the game with three runs off starter John Ely of Winston-Salem in the bottom of the second. Brandon Tripp hit a two-run homer and Miguel Abreu hit a two-out RBI single to center that tied the score 3-3.

Winston-Salem went back in front in the fourth when Paiml tripled with one out and scored on Francisco Hernandez's groundout for a 4-3 lead. They combined to produce another run in the seventh when Paiml doubled and scored on a Hernandez single for a 5-3 lead.

Ely (10-12) pitched five innings for the Warthogs, allowing three runs on four hits.

The second game of the four-game series is scheduled for tonight. Winston-Salem will send right-hander Clevelan Santeliz (3-6, 5.02) to the mound, while Frederick will counter with right-hander Tim Bascom (6-5, 5.93).
