A man whose body was found by Winston-Salem police in Germanton Thursday was strangled, a Forsyth County medical examiner ruled yesterday.
Daryl Dion Boyd, 32, of 2701 Brightwood Court was killed Monday, police said.
Richard Glenn Burris, 48, of 1117 Ebert St. was charged with first-degree murder after police investigated a phone tip about the killing.
Burris is accused of killing Boyd in Burris' home after an argument, police said. Boyd and Burris had been friends. Police had found Boyd's body in a culvert on the side of Hampton Road.
Burris was being held in the Forsyth County Jail last night, with no bond allowed.
CHARLOTTE -- A North Carolina man accused of threatening to shoot Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama has been indicted.
U.S. Attorney Gretchen C.F. Shappert said yesterday that Jerry M. Blanchard, 48, of Indian Trail has been charged with knowingly and willfully threatening to kill, kidnap and inflict bodily harm upon a major candidate for president.
Blanchard was arrested Aug. 1 after witnesses told federal authorities that they overheard Blanchard threatening to assassinate Obama in July. One witness said that Blanchard said he planned to buy a pistol.
According to a federal affidavit, there was no proof that Blanchard tried to carry out the threats.
Blanchard has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. If convicted, he faces a maximum five-year prison term.
GREEENSBORO -- Police have charged three men and two women after receiving reports that several men were robbed when responding to online advertisements for sex or massage.
Greensboro police Detective K.R. Jones said that five victims got directions to a location, then were robbed of cash and cell phones at vacant apartments in July.
Jones said that one victim had minor injuries.
Court documents reviewed by the Greensboro News & Record show that the suspects were armed with knives or guns.
Police have arrested Joshua Johnson, 18, and his sister Joshana Johnson, 17; Shenault Hedrick, 18, and his sister, Janella Hedrick, 20; and Nnandi Turner, 17.
The suspects are charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit a felony and common-law robbery.
RALEIGH -- The N.C. Highway Patrol is urging motorists to slow down as they take Labor Day weekend trips.
The patrol said that speed is the top cause of death in traffic accidents, and that troopers will increase patrols on interstates during the weekend.
The patrol said that there were 19 traffic fatalities in North Carolina during the holiday last year. There were 1,189 wrecks and 584 injuries during the weekend.
The patrol's commander, Col. Walter Wilson Jr., said that troopers have been told to aggressively enforce speed laws. The patrol also will be watching for aggressive drivers who follow too closely or make erratic lane changes.
