Playing their most important series of the season, the Winston-Salem Warthogs got off on the wrong foot last night with an 8-5 loss to the Kinston Indians.

The Warthogs are 2½ games ahead of the Indians in the race for the wild-card playoff spot in the Carolina League's Southern Division, but their five-game winning streak is finished.

The Indians, meanwhile, snapped their eight-game losing streak thanks in large part to wildness from the Warthogs' pitchers.

Starting pitcher Clevelan Santeliz was wild during his short night of work. He had five walks in 22/3 innings that helped the Indians score five runs. Santeliz, along with three other pitchers, combined to walk nine.

Despite the race for the wild-card heating up, just over 100 fans were on hand for the first pitch. The game was delayed for 15 minutes to let a passing shower come through, but there was little atmosphere despite this being the last series for the Warthogs at historic Ernie Shore Field.

"Bottom line is you can't give up those freebees," Manager Tim Blackwell of the Warthogs said about the walks. "That just puts you in a hole and you rarely recover from that. We had nine walks tonight and they scored five runs off them so that's your ballgame right there.…

"It was obvious Santeliz had no command whatsoever. Facts are facts and that puts him behind the eight ball when he walks guys like that."

The Warthogs were behind 6-2 but scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Dale Mollenhauer led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Carlos Rivero. C.J. Retherford walked and after an out, John Shelby's single scored Mollenhauer and Retherford. Later Salvador Sanchez singled to score Shelby and the Warthogs trailed 6-5.

But reliever Matt Zaleski fell into the same trap as Santeliz and had trouble finding the plate.

In the seventh Zaleski walked three and that led to two more runs by the Indians. Zaleski was replaced with two outs but it took Michael Dubee one pitch to get out of the jam as Jared Goedert grounded out to Dubee.

Retherford said: "I think with the day off (on Sunday) everyone was kind of still out of it. We kind of came out a little flat. We're just going to have to come out and play better and move on. We just have to get over it."

The Warthogs can clinch the wild-card spot by winning the next three games of the series, something that Retherford said can happen.

"We know we can beat these guys and we have to come out and throw strikes and do the little things right," Retherford said. "That's what we've been doing is the little things right but we didn't do that in this game."

The Indians got key hits up and down the lineup, led by first basement Jerad Head, who was 4 for 5 with two RBIs. Niuman Romero also had two RBIs as the Indians banged out 12 hits.

Carlton Smith, the Indians' starting pitcher, picked up the win and improved to 11-6. He went five innings, allowed seven hits and five runs with three strikeouts. Josh Judy was outstanding in middle relief, going two innings and allowing one hit while Josh Tomlin pitched the eighth inning.

Shutting down the Warthogs in the bottom of the ninth was Vincent Pestano, who got his eighth save of the season.

The Warthogs managed nine hits but shortstop Greg Paiml had his 10-game hitting streak snapped. Shelby led the Warthogs, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs and his 32nd stolen base of the season.

Blackwell said that even though his team seemingly has an advantage, that doesn't mean much.

"There's no such thing as a cushion," Blackwell said. "We have an opportunity and we have to take advantage of that opportunity, but all season long we are a club that doesn't like prosperity. What we get we like to give back so I guess we are good republicans and democrats."

The four-game series will continue tonight with Anthony Carter (6-4) starting on the mound for the Warthogs and Shawn Nottingham (2-4) starting for the Indians.
