STAMFORD, Conn. -- Dell Inc. had a 24.2 percent surge in server sales during the second quarter, far outpacing chief rival Hewlett-Packard Co., according to a report from Gartner Inc. released Thursday.

The pace of Dell's server shipments nearly doubled the industry's growth rate of 12.2 percent.

However, Hewlett-Packard still had the top market share in the quarter at 30.2 percent, or 706,724 servers. Dell had 24.7 percent of the market share, or 577,163 servers, while IBM Corp. was third at 13.2 percent, or 308,835 servers.

IBM's strong sales of mainframe and higher-end servers helped expand its lead in revenue from server sales at $4.3 billion. Hewlett-Packard's revenue from server sales was $3.8 billion, while Dell was third at $1.8 billion.
