A man held eight people at gunpoint in a house in Walnut Cove on Wednesday night before fleeing, but he didn't get far, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said yesterday.

Authorities said it appears that the man wrecked the stolen ATV he was riding. Deputies found him unconscious near the ATV.

Bruce Edward Kerns Jr., 27, of 1204 Baux Mountain Road in Germanton was charged with first-degree burglary, attempted armed robbery and possession of stolen property, all felonies.

About 9:45 p.m. Wednesday, a man forced himself into a house on Lake Woussicket Road, then held four adults and four children at gunpoint, demanding money. He put his gun to the head of at least one victim, the sheriff's office said.

He rode off on the ATV before deputies could arrive. He didn't get any money from the victims.

"We're not sure why he left, other than he was upset that he was not getting cooperation," sheriff's Maj. Brad Stanley said. Stanley said that one person in the house was able to get away and called 911 from a neighbor's house. He said that the victims said they do not know Kerns.

The sheriff's office said that deputies found Kerns unconscious at the intersection of Lake Woussicket Road and U.S. 311.

The ATV it appears he was riding was reported stolen on July 18 in Iredell County, the sheriff's office said.

Kerns was taken to Forsyth Medical Center for treatment.

He was being held in the Forsyth County Jail last night, with bond set $280,000.
