Fire & Police Briefs: Two armed men rob Kernersville store

KERNERSVILLE -- Two men robbed the Kangaroo Express convenience store on West Mountain Street yesterday, pointing handguns at the clerk, authorities said.

The men entered the store about 4:20 a.m. and demanded money, Kernersville police said. The men took an undisclosed amount of cash and left in a silver or gray Nissan.

The men were wearing black rags on their heads and black bandanas over their faces during the robbery, authorities said.

Woman who shot teenager got away by bus, police say

CHARLOTTE -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say they think that a woman who shot and killed a 14-year-old girl in car fled by bus.

Officers say that Ashante Mayfield was shot as she sat in a car after an argument among several girls Tuesday afternoon. Police said they don't know what started the argument.

Investigators were looking for a 19-year-old woman and a man who may have helped her get on the bus.

Missing Greensboro woman strangled, autopsy shows

GREENSBORO -- A prosecutor says that an autopsy shows that a Greensboro woman missing since 2006 was apparently strangled.

The body of Sherri Jackson, 27, was found June 26 in a grave behind a house in the city.

DeCarlo Rayshaun Bennett pleaded guilty to second-degree murder June 26.

Bennett told police where the body was as part of a plea deal.

He had been charged with first-degree murder.

Assistant District Attorney Howard Neumann had waited for the final autopsy before scheduling Bennett's sentencing. Neumann said he expects the sentencing hearing to be scheduled within a month.

Fort Bragg soldier died of natural causes, officials say

FAYETTEVILLE -- Investigators said that a Fort Bragg soldier found dead at her mother's home in Hamlet last weekend died of natural causes, Fort Bragg officials said.

Sgt. Kendale Blaine Carney, 28, was found about 10:30 a.m. Saturday. A member of the 18th Airborne Corps, she was home on leave from Iraq. She was a food-service specialist with the 503rd Maintenance Battalion, 507th Corps Support Group.

Memorial services will be held at Fort Bragg and in Iraq, but no date has been set.
