■ Running back Steven Jackson of the St. Louis Rams ended his holdout yesterday while his agent continues negotiations for a new contract.
Jackson is entering the final year of a deal he signed as a first-round pick in 2004.
The Rams cut off negotiations in late July on the first day of training camp after Jackson's agent turned down a deal the team said would have put Jackson in the top echelon at his position, saying there would be no further talks until he reported.
■ Tom Nalen, a five-time Pro Bowl center, is headed back to the operating table.
Nalen, the only player left from the Denver Broncos' Super Bowl teams of the late 1990s, needs another operation on his left knee after surgery in June failed to put him back on the field without pain.
Nalen, 37, will undergo another arthroscopic surgery on his left knee today, according to Coach Mike Shanahan, who is still holding out hope that Nalen will be ready for the season opener at Oakland on Sept. 8.
■ Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck of the Seattle Seahawks didn't practice again because of a stiff back yesterday, and he may also miss his second consecutive preseason game, against San Diego.
Coach Mike Holmgren said he's trying to ensure that Hasselbeck is ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 7 at Buffalo.
No. 3 quarterback Charlie Frye again took most of the snaps yesterday morning -- just as he is likely to do on Monday night against the Chargers.
Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace was again limited in practice with a sore groin, leaving Frye to run the first and second-team units.
■ Wide receiver Kevin Curtis of the Philadelphia Eagles will have surgery today to repair a sports hernia and will likely miss the start of the regular season.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said he thinks Curtis, the team's top receiver last season, will be back during the regular season, but no timetable has been set.
After signing with the Eagles as a free agent last year, Curtis had a career-high 77 catches for a team-best 1,110 yards and six touchdowns.
■ Troy Smith will be the Ravens' starting quarterback for Saturday's preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, Coach John Harbaugh said yesterday.
Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner, may play as much as three quarters as the Ravens want to evaluate him as they try to determine who will be the quarterback in the season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7.
Former starter Kyle Boller is Smith's chief competition, yet he might not even play against the Rams. Boller has committed a team-high three turnovers in two preseason games.
