Greetings Again, Smittyheads,

The second Evening with Eight – Plus Smitty! is coming up. This one  should be informative, because we have two local government managers in the same lineup. On Wednesday , August 27th we’ll have speakers J. Dudley Watts, Jr., County Manager, County of Forsyth and Lee Garrity, City Manager, City of Winston-Salem. Both will talk about their respective roles and the challenges and opportunities the two government bodies face today. Should be a fun night. Seats are still available. Now to the business at hand….

Celtic Café is moving to 924 South Marshall Street.

Just confirmed: Celtic Café, currently located at The Towers Shopping Center on South Stratford Road, is moving just south of downtown. The eatery is relocating to the space currently occupied by Marshall Street Smokehouse and Wine Bar at 924 South Marshall Street near the Southeast Gateway. The Smokehouse will be closing at the end of August. Owner Mark Freedman is planning to concentrate on culinary endeavors in Greensboro, where he resides.

Celtic Café owners Teresa and John O’Brien (mother and son) will close their current location on August 29th. The restaurant will move and renovations will take place over the following two weeks. An anticipated opening is planned sometime after September 10th.

New changes expected are an expanded menu to include more seafood dishes. The O’Brien family plans to have the restaurant open for dinner only. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday – Thursday, 4:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 4:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. The bar will be open until the last person leaves. There is some other interesting downtown restaurant news bubbling beneath the surface. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks.

Summertime Brews Festival is back at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex - Saturday, August 23

Back again is the Summertime Brews Festival happening Saturday, August 23 4-8:00 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex Pavilion.  This is the fourth year for the festival that attracted a couple thousand beer connoisseurs from around the Triad who tasted more than 110 different kinds of cool brews last year. With the changes in the brewing laws in North Carolina a couple of years ago, which allows a higher alcohol content for craft beers, folks have taken their taste in brews pretty darn seriously.

At this year’s festival you will be able to sample more than 100 craft beers from local and world renowned brewers. Local brewers slated to participate include Natty Greene's, Red Oak Brewery and Liberty Steakhouse and Brewery, all in Guilford County, and Forsyth County’s  own Foothills Brewing Company. Live music and food will be available. Tickets are $25 (includes admission, parking and a 2 oz. pour of each brew) and can be purchased at Foothills Brewing Co. or at the door for $30. Should be a fun afternoon to put a start your night. For more details and list of participating brewers and beers, visit the event web site at http://www.summertimebrews.com Proceeds to benefit the American Red Cross.

Evening with Eight – Plus Smitty! Wednesday, August 27

Intelligence. Humor. Good Conversation.

Evening with 8 -- Plus Smitty! is a different kind of dining experience, one where you can meet and mingle with cool people in a casual atmosphere. Plus, the food is first-class, and you can open your mind to new things. Just ask any of the 1,000 or so folks who have met, hung out and forged new friendships and contacts with Smitty over the past seven years. We like to think of it as building social capital in Winston-Salem—one meal at a time!

The first dinner is Wednesday , August 27th with speaker - J. Dudley Watts, Jr., County Manager – County of Forsyth and Lee Garrity, City Manager – City of Winston-Salem

Dudley Watts is the County Manager and has been in that role since 2007 replacing previous Manager Graham Pervier. He graduated with a B.S. from NC State in Economics, with a technical option in computer science.  Attended graduate school at UNC Chapel Hill and received a Master degree in Public Administration.  He worked for several years with a national consulting firm conducting operations reviews and other studies for local government clients. Previously he served as an Assistant County Manager and Finance Officer for Pender County (on the coast) for about three years and as County Manager in Granville County (North of Raleigh and Durham) for nine years before coming to Forsyth County.

Lee Garrity is the City Manager and has been that role since 2006, replacing previous Manager Bill Stuart. He graduated from George Mason University with a B.A. and Masters degree in Public Administration. He has also completed continuing education work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Institute of Government. Lee worked a number of years in Washington, D.C. for the United State Senate Committee on Finance and Federal Election Commission. He began working for the City of Winston-Salem in 1992, holding various titles, including Senior Budget and Evaluation Analyst; Director of Office of Organizational Effectiveness; and Assistant City Manager.

Dudley and Lee are contemporaries who started in their roles relatively  at the same time. Each replaced two long-serving and respected managers in local government. They also are leading their respective organizations through change, such serving the citizens through e-government, trying to maintain the current level of government services with raising taxes as a last option—along with dealing with the change of economy and demographics in our community.

Come enjoy this opportunity to have both local government leaders in the same room and hear their different perspectives and challenges in serving in their roles.

September 10 - Kevin Terry, President – Winston-Salem Baseball Downtown

September 25 - Portia Mount, Vice President of Global Marketing – The Center of Creative Leadership  (This dinner is in partnership with the Piedmont Club's Women's Networking Group)

October 16 -  WSPrime Restaurant  Oktoberfest Beer Dinner featuring Spencer Davis - Partner, City Beverage  and Timothy Grandinetti - Executive Chef, Twin City Quarter

The best part about Evening with 8— Plus Smitty! is that everyone gets the chance to mix good conversation and good food—at an all-inclusive fee of $45 (registration fee and dinner). Dinners are held at The Piedmont Club, 19th Floor BB&T Financial Center, 200 West Second Street in downtown Winston-Salem.

Rock the Block is looking for volunteers

We’re halfway through the “Music in the Street” series, and I’m already getting e-mails about Rock the Block. Sit tight folks! Let’s enjoy the rest of the summer. However, if you must know, Rock the Block 2008, which will be in its seventh year and is supported by the City of Winston-Salem and Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership, returns on Friday, September 19 to "Fourth Street Winston" from 6:00 p.m. to midnight. Plenty of entertainment will be on tap, namely live music—rock 'n' roll, swing, beach, country, bluegrass and hip-hop/dance club—on four stages along Fourth Street from Poplar to Liberty. It takes quite a few people to produce such a large show that will last about six hours.

Volunteers are needed to help set up from 3:00 p.m–5:00 p.m. or 4:00 p.m.– 6:00 p.m. and work the late-night shifts from 8:00 p.m. on. If you are interested, find out more about Rock the Block 2008 and be a part of this huge downtown event. Plus, meet some great people along the way—like your "neighbors. A “Yoga Studio Merger” and Yogafest Weekend happening on Trade Street in September

After nearly seven years of friendly competition, two great yoga studios—with similar styles, philosophies and aesthetics—are combining into one full-service studio with twice as many classes and a cadre of elite teachers whose abilities and knowledge are unsurpassed in the Triad. And let’s not forget  a retail store with exclusive yoga clothes and accessories.

On September 1, the Arts of Yoga will come to hang (in more ways than one) at the Yoga Gallery, 633 North Trade St., in the heart of the Downtown Arts District. A brand-new downstairs studio, designed by artist and yoga teacher Billy McClain, will include a “yoga wall” for the optimal use of props and techniques to enhance any yoga practice. And Let It Be Yoga, Amy McGinnis’s boutique will offer products to deepen your practice.

The invigorated Yoga Gallery will offer classes seven days a week, ranging from meditation to therapeutic yoga that gently awakens the body, mind and heart to vigorous flow styles that will take you to the edge of your physical, mental and emotional possibilities— and beyond what you’ve ever imagined.

Lunchtime yoga classes will let you unwind, reconnect with your vitality and return to work with a refreshed body and a more creative mind.

But don’t take our word for it. Find out for yourself at the Yoga Gallery’s Grand Opening and Yoga-Fest Weekend, which will kick off during the Gallery Hop 6-9 p.m. Friday, September 5. We’ll have refreshments, and music for listening and dancing by Colin Allured and Friends.

The celebration will continue with free yoga classes all day Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7. And we’ll be giving away two hand-picked, luxurious home-practice packages worth $500 each, a chance not to be missed.

The heart and soul of yoga is cooperation and discovery, reconciling the apparently contradictory qualities of self-mastery and compassion, and uniting the mind, body and spirit.

Oh, and did we mention? It’s really fun.

For more information, call Judi at 725-4119 or Lynn at 655-4074. Or visit our Web sites: http://www.yogagallery.net and http://www.artsofyoga.com.

There are no ordinary moments. Yoga awakens you to them all.
