Primo Water helps form consortium on bioplastics

Primo Water Corp. said yesterday that it has helped form the Bioplastics Recycling Consortium with 19 other groups.
The consortium's goal is to develop an effective, efficient and economical recovery system and end markets for post-consumer bioplastic materials. Industry sectors involved in the consortium include the waste and recycling industry, brand owners, retailers, and academic and research institutions.
Primo Water, based in Winston-Salem, is offering a biodegradable water bottle that uses plant material for its plastic. Primo said that its bottle is made from plastic derived from plants that is known by polylactide, or PLA, and the trademark Ingeo.
Participants in the first consortium meeting included the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers, Climate Neutral, NatureWorks LLC, Porter Novelli, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Solid Waste, the University of Florida's Bill Hinkley Center for Solid and Hazardous Waste Management. and the Yale Office of Sustainability.
