A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old were in critical condition after being struck by a Surry County ambulance Monday night, Winston-Salem police said.
Police said Jamaal Deshawn Shell, 16, and Daquanta Janeele Mack, 15, were trying to cross University Parkway about 9:40 on their bicycles when they "rode directly into the path of the ambulance."
The teens were struck in the 5200 block of University Parkway, which is south of the intersection with Shattalon Road. The ambulance was heading south; the teens were crossing the road from west to east.
The ambulance did not have its lights or sirens on — it was on a non-emergency call, police said.
Police did not release the name of the ambulance driver. No one in the ambulance was injured, police said.
A supervisor with Surry County Emergency Services could not immediately be reached.
Ambulances took the teenagers to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Police said Mack was in "critical and unstable conditon" and that Shell was in "critical and stable" condition.
Police said neither speed nor alcohol appears to be a factor in the accident. Neither Mack nor Shell was wearing a helmet.
