Police arrested a Winston-Salem man early yesterday morning after he violated a domestic-violence order, came to his wife's residence with a pistol and refused to come out of the house.

Faith Spainhour, 43, was able to get out of the house with her 10- and 15-year-old sons after suffering minor injuries during a physical struggle with her husband.
The Winston-Salem Police Department's Special Enforcement and Crisis Negotiation Teams were called in. After they negotiated with Spainhour for more than three hours, he surrendered. There were no further injuries.

GATESVILLE -- Tens of thousands of fish have died in a 760-acre lake in a state park in northeastern North Carolina, and officials are pointing to an invasive aquatic plant species.
Park superintendent Jay Greenwood said that decaying parrot feather likely has depleted oxygen levels in the pond at Merchants Millpond State Park, suffocating about 125,000 bass, bluegill and catfish.
Greenwood says the lake is closed until further notice.
Parrot feather is native to South America but has spread to the United States.
Charlie Peek, a spokesman for the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation, said that parrot feather was introduced into the country because of its popularity in aquatic gardens.
Twin aerators are to be installed in the lake to promote decomposition of the dead fish and restore oxygen levels for the remaining fish.

RALEIGH -- North Carolina authorities will soon have new powers to punish sex offenders.
Gov. Mike Easley announced Saturday that he had signed into law two bills designed to help state officials protect children from sex offenders.
One law makes it a felony for a registered sex offender to use a social networking Web site accessible to minors, starting Dec. 1. It also increases the penalties for some sex crimes involving children.
The other law requires registered sex offenders to give law enforcement their e-mail addresses and online user IDs, starting May 1. That information can be provided to social networking Web sites so they can screen users.
Officials with those sites, including MySpace, asked for the laws so they could kick off offenders.
CHARLOTTE -- Police arrested four drivers and seized six cars Saturday after a group of people turned a 13-mile stretch of Interstate 485 into a drag-racing strip.

When police reached the racers, the group scattered. Police Detective Louis Rango said that the group had 20 to 40 drivers, and one reached an estimated speed of 140 mph while fleeing.
Three of the four arrested were from Charlotte and the fourth is from Dallas in Gaston County. Two of the four were in custody at the Mecklenburg County Jail. A search is on for two suspects who ran from the area after police arrived.
