A Forsyth jury will resume deliberating Tuesday morning in the first-degree murder case against Jose Valverde.

Valverde, 30, is accused of shooting Rosenda Prudente-Rodriguez, 25, on the night of Jan. 16, 2006, or early the next morning.

Valverde said a man robbed him that night as he returned from going out drinking with a friend and the robber killed Prudente-Rodriguez, the mother of his two children. She was 41/2 months pregnant.

Beirne Harding, an assistant district attorney, told jurors in closing arguments that Valverde made up a story he had never told detectives before, one that can't account for all the physical evidence in the case.

Valverde's son, Jose, testified that he saw his father shoot his mother after an argument.

"Do you believe him (Jose) or do you believe that cock-and-bull story?" Harding asked jurors.

Jurors deliberated about 11/2 hours before asking to see a transcript of Jose's testimony against his father. They are scheduled to return at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday .
