■ The New York Yankees have fired two scouts under investigation in an inquiry of possible kickbacks from contracts with Latin American players, The Associated Press reported yesterday.
The Yankees terminated the contracts of Carlos Rios, their director of Latin American scouting, and Ramon Valdivia, their Dominican Republic scouting director, said a baseball official speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The two had been on leave and were fired Thursday, the official said.
They were accused of skimming six figures from the deals, a second baseball official said.
General Manager Brian Cashman of the Yankees didn't immediately return a call from the AP.
Major League Baseball has been investigating alleged skimming involving Latin American operations for months. The Chicago White Sox fired three people in their Latin American operations in May, and the Boston Red Sox fired their Dominican scouting supervisor.
■ The ACC baseball tournament won't be played at Fenway Park in Boston until 2010. The league and the group that owns the stadium said that because of a scheduling error, Fenway isn't available for the 2009 tournament.
Commissioner John Swofford said that the ACC is looking for "a quality venue" to replace Fenway as the host for next year's tournament.
■ The Baltimore Orioles and top draft pick Brian Matusz agreed yesterday to a four-year contract that guarantees him $3,472,500, making Matusz, a left-hander, the first selection this year to receive a major-league deal.
Matusz, 21, the fourth pick in the 2008 amateur draft, faced a midnight deadline to reach an agreement. He spent three years at the University of San Diego, going 12-2 with a 1.71 ERA in 2008 as a junior.
■ The Kansas City Royals signed fourth-round draft pick Tim Melville, a right-handed pitcher from Wentzville, Mo., finished his senior year of high school with an 8-1 record, a 2.56 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 52 innings.
Many scouts considered Melville to have first-round talent, but he slipped to the fourth round because clubs thought he would be hard to sign.
■ The St. Louis Cardinals put right-hander Chris Carpenter on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a strained pitching shoulder.
He joins right-hander Adam Wainwright and left-hander Mark Mulder on the DL.
Carpenter had reconstructive elbow surgery in July 2007 and made three big-league starts before the latest problem developed. He felt pain in the shoulder while throwing a fastball last Sunday, and an MRI on Tuesday detected a strain.
