□ The Bethlehem Community Center Inc., a nonprofit organization and a mission project of the of the United Methodist Church, recently held its third annual Bike To The Beach Fundraiser. Eleven bikers rode from Midway School in Lexington to Ocean Isle Beach. Each rider was requested to raise at least $600 and assist the center in finding sponsors. The riders were: Chuck Kirby, Hugh Wallace, Tim Gupton, Julie Raines, Bill Tutt, Scott Krewshon, Tommy Minter, Hal Swantes, Regan McDuffie, Reginald Wall and Randy Peters. Support staff were: Thomas Shore, Yvonne Shore, Sarah Murray-Stephney, Pat Shouse, Joseph Stephney, Albert Dalton and Hissan Mack.
□ Brady and Mary Mullinax of Kernersville recently received a McIver-Hess Achievement Award from the N.C. State Beekeepers Association.
The couple received the award for their contributions to the association and the beekeeping industry. Brady Mullinax worked to get the honeybee designated as the state's official insect in 1973.
The couple work as vendors selling honey and related products at the Farmers Market in Kernersville.
□ Desirae Clodfelter of Walkertown recently returned from Iran where she participated in a "citizen diplomacy" delegation, organized by Global Exchange.
□ Northern Hospital of Surry County's Lifeline program was recognized recently by Philips Lifeline at its headquarters in Framingham, Mass., as a valuable member of the Philips Lifeline Academy.
Daphne Turner, the program manager of the program at the hospital, accepted the award on behalf of the hospital.
□ Beatrice Denise Wilkerson and Sydney Elizabeth Sauers, both of Winston-Salem, have been awarded the C. Douglas Carter Scholarships, teaching scholarships, by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Retired School Personnel. Beatrice, a graduate of Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, will attend N.C. A&T State University. She is the daughter of Douglas and Mary Wilkerson.
Sydney, a graduate of Mount Tabor High School, will attend Meredith College. She is the daughter of Larry and Carol Sauers.
□ Erica Chin of Kernersville was selected to attend National Young Scholars Program summer program at Wake Forest University to study the human body. She is a rising fifth-grader at Moore Magnet School. Erica is in the Academically Gifted Program at Moore and is an accomplished student in visual arts, piano and guitar in her age group.
□ Richelle Pugh, a student at Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, has been selected for membership in The National Society of High School Scholars.
□ Thomas Page Dancy of Winston-Salem was named to the spring-semester president's list at the University of Oklahoma, Norman.
□ Andrea Scalise-Gordy of Winston-Salem has received a master of pastoral studies degree from the College of Social Sciences at Loyola University, New Orleans.
□ Natalie Braswell of Winston-Salem, a rising senior, recently completed a Meredith College study-abroad program in Italy and Switzerland.
□ Briana Brewer, the daughter of Greg and Jackie Brewer of Clemmons, recently attended the Legislators' School for Youth Leadership Development at Western Carolina University. She is a rising 10th-grader at West Forsyth High School.
□ Chelsey M. McElwee, the daughter of Randy and Mary McElwee of Clemmons, has been named to the spring-semester president's list at Elon University. She is a 2007 graduate of West Forsyth High School.
□ Brian Rooks of Kernersville, the son of Susan Rooks, has become a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, National Leadership and Honors Organization at UNC Chapel Hill. He was also recognized as a member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and was on the dean's list for both fall and spring semesters.
□ Luisa Gomez and Zellena Patrice Williams of Winston-Salem have successfully completed the 2008 Science Enrichment Preparation Program at UNC Chapel Hill. Gomez is a rising sophomore studying biology at N.C. State University. Williams is a rising senior studying pharmacy at Hampton University.
□ Sally Alicia Hammonds, the daughter of Fred and Cindy Hammonds of Lewisville, recently graduated magna cum laude from Western Carolina University with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. She is a 2004 graduate of West Forsyth High School.

□ Uchenna Vasser, an assistant professor of English and foreign languages at Winston-Salem State University, has been selected as one of 25 participants in the National Endowment for the Humanities-supported Summer Institute for College and University Teachers this summer in Ireland. She is studying the writings of William Butler Yeats.
□ Elysia Meredith Drake of Winston-Salem will be inducted into the Alpha Mu Rho chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Forsyth Technical Community College Oct. 24. She is the daughter of Ted and Debbie Drake.
□ Janecia Sue Hatfield of Winston-Salem received a bachelor's degree June 28 from Judson College, Marion, Ala.
□ Kathryn Claire Brown of Winston-Salem was named to the spring-semester dean's list at DePauw University, Greencastle, Ind.
□ William R. Carlton Jr. and John R. Folger IV, both of Winston-Salem, were named to the spring-semester dean's list at Virginia Military Institute, Lexington, Va.

□ Lauren Sherwood, 16, of Winston-Salem was selected to participate in the 16th annual session of the Kennedy Center's ballet training program, Exploring Ballet with Suzanne Farrell, July 28-Aug. 16. The dancers, ages 14-18, were selected from an international audition process held last winter and are from Bulgaria, The Czech Republic and the United States.
□ Jim Grobe, the head football coach at Wake Forest University, was honored Aug. 1 with a 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award by the Triad Carolinas chapter of the Arthritis Foundation at its annual dinner and program at Bermuda Run Country Club. He was selected for the award because of his outstanding professional achievements and leadership qualities and for his longterm commitment to Wake Forest University and to the community.
□ State Employees' Credit Union has been recognized by the N.C. State Board of Education and the N.C. Department of Public Instruction for collaborating with DPI to improve personal financial-literacy education in North Carolina's public schools. SECU, a longtime promoter of the National Endowment for Financial Education High School Financial Planning Program, partnered with the Department of Public Instruction in 2007-08 to provide NEFE training to the state's high-school civics and economics teachers.
□ Katherine Murray and Matthew Meadors recently served as pages in the N.C. Senate.
Both were sponsored by Sen. Peter Brunstetter, R-Forsyth. Katherine, a student at Mount Tabor High School, is the daughter of Craige and Sonja Murray of Winston-Salem. Matthew, a student at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, is the son of Michael and B.H. Meadors of Lewisville.
□ Jeff Smith of Germanton had a runner-up finish in his division at the World Horseshoe Pitching Championships in York, Pa., the weekend of July 12. Smith, 85, had a final score of 417 in the Elder M division (age 70 and older) and improved on a fourth-place finish at last year's world tournament.
□ Katie Freeman of Advance helped the Knock-outs win the girls 8s championship at the Kick It 3v3 soccer tournament in Statesville July 13.
□ Air Force Airman Thomas B. Hole has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas
Hole, a 2000 graduate of South Stokes High School, is the son of Kandis Fox of Pfafftown and Toby Hole of Walnut Cove.
□ Army Cpt. Eric R. Kottke of Kernersville recently returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq with the 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division. He is currently attending the Armor Captain's Career Course at Fort Knox, Ky., which will prepare him to assume duties as com-
mander of a company-sized unit. Kottke is a 2000 graduate of East Forsyth High School and a 2004 graduate of U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
He is the son of Thomas and Mary Kottke of Kernersville.
□ Air Force Airman Andrew F. Gyke has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
He is a 2007 graduate of North Davidson High School and is the son of Belinda Brown of Winston-Salem and Peter Gyke of Wheelersburg, Ohio.
□ Navy Reserve Seaman Recruit Gabriel K. Chalfa and Navy Reserve Seaman Mark R. Beuter recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.
Chalfa is a 2001 graduate of North Stokes High School.
Beuter is a 1995 graduate of Davie High School and a 2000 graduate of N.C. State University.
He is the son of Lynn M. and Richard L. Beuter of Mocksville.
□ Trey Vickers of Boy Scout Troop 934 at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout June 15 during a ceremony at Parkway Presbyterian Church. For his Eagle project, Trey organized and led an effort to refurbish the playground at Parkland Presbyterian by landscaping, removing unsafe equipment and designing, building and installing a new climbing wall.
He recently completed a two-week expedition to Philmont Scout Reservation in Cimarron, N.M., with Scoutmaster David Helms and a crew from Troop 934.
Trey earned the religious knot, Cubmaster Award and the Arrow of Light Award as a Cub Scout with Pack 934. As a Boy Scout, he has earned 28 merit badges. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow. Trey has served as an Elangomat and as the vice-chief of elections and camping promotions for the local Elauwit Chapter. He has served as a den chief, a troop historian and an OA troop representative.
Trey, a rising sophomore at Reagan High School, is the son of Will and Delana Vickers of Winston-Salem.
□ Hayley Boling, a member of Cadette Girl Scout Troop 266, has received the God and Church Scouting Award at Mizpah Moravian Church. She is the daughter of Jon and Wendy Boling of Clemmons.
□ Marisa Ludolf, a member of Girl Scout Troop 1018, has received her Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award in Cadette Girl Scouting. For her project, she created an educational recycling-awareness activity that she presented to local Brownie Troops. She has also received a Girl Scout Bronze Award and President's Award for Academic Excellence.
Marisa, a rising ninth-grader at Mount Tabor High School, has been a Girl Scout for eight years. She is the daughter of David and Annette Ludolf of Winston-Salem.
