Is the Democratic Party really an aphrodisiac? Will John Edwards, Bill Clinton and former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer sing "Viva Viagra" at the Democratic convention?

Many people are strongly opposed to the Olympics being held in China for many reasons. My question is: Why didn't more of these people make their opinions heard in July 2001, when the games were awarded to China?
Let's give it a rest for the next two weeks and concentrate on the most important part of the games: the athletes.

The character-assassination ad being run by the Alliance for North Carolina is typical of the way Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue does her campaigning: She sits back, claims she is abiding by the rules and lets groups financed by sources outside North Carolina do her nasty campaigning. In reality, Perdue is a very cold, cunning and calculating campaigner.
The Democrats realize she is weak in substance. They need nasty ads with lies and innuendo to cover up the fact that Democrats in Raleigh are corrupt (think former House Speaker Jim Black and former Rep. Thomas Wright), have bankrupted the state with over-spending, have ignored illegal immigration and have done little to fight gang violence in our cities, not to mention the loss of jobs across our state due to the Democrats' anti-business tax climate as compared to neighboring states.
We do not need another Democratic governor in our state. We need new faces in Raleigh -- in the governor's mansion and in the State House and Senate. Charlotte Mayor Pat McCrory has proved that he can successfully run the largest city in our state. Pat McCrory is much better qualified to be our next governor.

In Scott Sexton's Aug. 3 column, "How does a family beset by tragedy face yet another?" he talks about the additional tragedy to the Gallaher family of a family member (John K. Gallaher III) who is charged with murdering two young people, one of whom had been a close friend. Truly this was a tragedy, but not just for the Gallaher family.
Hardly mentioned in the article is the tragedy of the loss of the victims' lives and the grief, suffering and financial hardship of the victims' families as a result of these senseless murders.
No longer will the wife, children and parents of Sean Gallagher have a husband, father and son in their life. No longer will the parents and siblings of Lori Fioravanti have the ability to watch the beautiful Lori's life unfold.
Yes, it is an additional tragedy to the Gallaher family to now have a family member who has apparently confessed to murder. But -- what about the victims' families?

Winston-Salem is a much better and prettier place today. I am a better and happier person today. All of this is because a wonderful person, Richard Redding, lived in our community ("Meridian Realty Group's Redding dies at 54," Aug. 5). Thanks for everything, Richard!
