The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is investigating injuries to a 19-day-old boy who was brought to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Sunday with broken bones.
The sheriff's office got a report about 3 p.m. from the hospital's medical staff about the boy, the sheriff's office said in a statement. The boy was taken to the hospital by the Forsyth County EMS. After doctors examined him, they determined that he had broken bones.
Investigators will try to determine where, how and when he sustained his injuries, the statement said. They spoke with the boy's parents and others who had been with him.
No charges have been filed.
A Boone police officer was arrested last week on child pornography charges, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Justice said yesterday.
Marvin Eric Tart, 34, is charged with six counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor.
Tart, a nine-year veteran of the department, resigned shortly before his arrest, said Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for the Department of Justice.
The arrest was a result of an investigation by the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation, Talley said. Both agencies are part of the N.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which is headed by the SBI.
Boone police would not comment beyond providing information on Tart's employment.
Tart started working for the department on April 5, 1999, and resigned at 4 p.m. Thursday, police said.
Tart was being held in the Watauga County Jail yesterday with bond set at $60,000.
LEXINGTON -- A Salisbury man has been arrested and charged with sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl from Lexington, the Davidson County Sheriff's Office said yesterday in a news release.
Daniel Paul Luther, 25, of Salisbury was charged with three counts of statutory rape/sex offense with the defendant being six years older than the victim, and eight counts of indecent liberties with a child.
The sheriff's office received a report about the suspected abuse on July 19. Detectives accused Luther of committing several sexual offenses with the girl on March 1 and May 20.
Luther was in the Davidson County Jail yesterday with bond set at $75,000. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 25.
