Ely pitches Hogs past Nats for series split

WOODBRIDGE, Va.
John Ely continued his recent hot streak and helped pitch the Winston-Salem Warthogs to a 5-0 win against the Potomac Nationals last night, salvaging a split of a four-game series.
Ely pitched six shutout innings while limiting the Nationals to four hits. He struck out five and did not allow a walk. Ely won his third straight start, allowing one earned run in 16 innings of work.
Winston-Salem grabbed an early lead with two runs in the first inning of starting pitcher Ross Detwiler of the Nationals. Paulo Orlando and John Shelby both singled with one out. After a double steal moved the runners to second and third, C.J. Retherford lined a double off the base of the right-field wall to put the Warthogs in front 2-0.
Winston-Salem tacked on a run in the fifth inning. Joe Persichina singled and advanced to second base on a ground out. With two outs, Retherford hit a run-scoring single to center that gave the Warthogs a 3-0 lead.
The Warthogs manufactured an unearned run in the seventh inning off Nationals reliever Jack Spradlin. Francisco Hernandez led off with single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Ricks. Next, Orlando rolled an infield single to third base that was thrown away by Darryl Lawhorn, which allowed Hernandez to score from second.
Freddie Thon added an RBI single in the eighth inning to give the Warthogs a 5-0 advantage.
The bullpen took over from Ely in the seventh. Ricky Brooks worked two hitless innings and Henry Mabee worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the shutout.
Detwiler, the first-round pick (sixth overall) of the Washington Nationals in 2007, went six innings and allowed three runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out seven.
Winston-Salem will continue its week-long road trip with the first game of a three-game series against Wilmington tonight. The Warthogs are scheduled to start right-hander Clevelan Santeliz (2-5, 4.36 ERA) against right-hander Mario Santiago (7-6, 3.64). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
