A Boone police officer was arrested last week on child pornography charges, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Justice said today.
Marvin Eric Tart, 34, is charged with six counts of second-degree exploitation of a minor.
Tart, a nine-year veteran of the department, resigned on Thursday, shortly before his arrest, said Noelle Talley, a spokeswoman for the Department of Justice.
The arrest was a result of an investigation by the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation, Talley said. Both agencies are part of the N.C. Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which is headed by the SBI.
Boone police would not comment beyond providing information on Tart's employment. Tart started working for the department on April 5, 1999 and resigned at 4 p.m. Thursday, police said.
Tart is being held in the Watauga County Jail under a $60,000 bond.
