NBA star Josh Howard was charged late Thursday with trying to race cars after Winston-Salem police pulled him over on Business 40 near Silas Creek Parkway. Howard was driving 95 mph in a 55 mph zone on Business 40.

Howard, a Winston-Salem native who starred at Wake Forest, was arrested just before midnight and taken to the Magistrate's Office in Forsyth County.

He was charged with speeding, reckless driving and racing. He was released from the magistrate's office on a written promise to appear in court on Sept. 23.

An officer patrolling for speeders on southbound Business 40 and Silas Creek saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen Golf approaching. He pulled over the black Lexus, which Howard was driving, according to Winston-Salem police.

Howard is in Winston-Salem this week for a basketball camp sponsored by his foundation. He was seen at the camp today, but was not available for comment.

The arrest is the latest incident in a rocky few months for Howard. He faced controversy earlier this year over comments he made to an ESPN radio host about marijuana use in the off season.
