A former teacher at East Forsyth High School who was suspended in Forsyth County in 1998 has been arrested in New Bern on two counts of misdemeanor assault on a female.
New Bern police said that Phillip Samuel Beeson, 53, was arrested Monday and put in the Craven County Jail, with bond set at $5,000. Beeson apparently made bond later, as he was no longer in the jail yesterday.
Police said they were notified by officials with the Craven County Schools in February about allegations of inappropriate behavior by Beeson that involved two students at New Bern High School.
Beeson taught social studies and coached the girls basketball team in New Bern, the New Bern Sun Journal reported. He was put on administrative leave in February.
In Forsyth County, Beeson resigned from his position as a teacher and assistant football coach at East Forsyth after an incident reported in November 1998 that involved six teachers at the school. Beeson was suspended without pay when the allegations surfaced.
One of the teachers, Douglas Shields, was accused of videotaping himself having sex with two female students and showing the tapes to others. In 2001, Shields pleaded guilty to one count of disseminating obscene materials and one count of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
School officials said at the time that Beeson knew about Shields' conduct and failed to report it.
No criminal charges were filed against Beeson.
