Local technology to be displayed in September

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The latest in local technology innovations — ranging from drug research, nose protectors and self-guided city tours — will be on display Sept. 15 at the 10th annual technology briefing held by the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce.

The free event will take place at 8 a.m. in Benton Convention Center.

The briefing also is serving as the kickoff to the Triad Business and Innovation Expo, which is expected to have nearly 200 exhibitors and attract more than 2,000 attendees.

This year's briefing presenters are Cook Medical, NanoMedica, OnceLogix, Paragon Noise Barriers, SkinDeep FX, Small Footprint/Treks in the City, Stantec, Verbal Victor and the Virginia Tech/Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering.

"From large advanced manufacturers building innovative products for sale around the world to the individual passionate entrepreneur with just an idea, this year's presenters demonstrate how innovation is impacting our entire economy," said Peggy Low, the chamber's senior vice president of technology.

The chamber does not have any special 10th anniversary plans for the briefing, which often represents a startup company's first public unveiling of its technology.

"We want to further strengthen the connection between innovation and the broader business community," said Bret Marchant, the chamber's research and economic-development director.

"We hope that people who just attend the expo will come to the tech briefing and see firsthand how some local companies are using technology and innovation to continue our economy's transformation."

Marchant said several presenters have grown to become "significant components of the local economy." Among the alumni are B/E Aerospace Inc., Targacept Inc. and the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine.

Other examples include Ocular Systems, which recently announced it had processed its 10,000 cornea transplant, and Carolina Liquid Chemistries, which continues to attract attention for its line of fast chemistries involving chemistry analyzers for research and hospital laboratories.

Marchant said having some presenters still based in Piedmont Triad Research Park "is a sign the park and our other efforts to grow Winston-Salem's technology-based economy are having long-lasting effects."
