Business Briefs: Foothills Brewing to sell beers at Panthers games

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Foothills Brewing will start selling some of its beers at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte for the Carolina Panthers games, beginning with Fan Fest this weekend.

"We're going to have four of our beers at three different stations," said Jamie Bartholomaus, the president, co-owner and brewmaster of Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem.

Bartholomaus expects the sports venue to bring in good sales and increase awareness of Foothills' brands.

The company has been selling its beers at the RBC Center in Raleigh for three years and at the Durham Bulls stadium in Durham for four years.

In January, Foothills Brewing announced the acquisition of Carolina Beer & Beverage and a renovation project for its second production site in Winston-Salem.

Bartholomaus said Monday that he hopes to be making beer at Foothills' second production location at 3800 Kimwell Drive in Stratford Industrial Park within the next few months.

Minority business scholarships in works

The Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce and Wake Forest University are working together to offer 25 minority business scholarships that will provide one year of free chamber membership.

The goal of the program is to assist with the growth and development of minority- and women-owned businesses and to encourage diverse businesses to become active members of the chamber and the local business community.

"Through the Minority Business Scholarship program, we are reaching out to engage diverse businesses in the Chamber of Commerce," said Gayle Anderson, the president and chief executive of the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce. "Wake Forest's sponsorship allows us to offer membership and personalized assistance to businesses that might not otherwise be able to participate."

Hof Milam, Wake Forest's senior vice president and chief financial officer, said that the program is a chance for the university to support the growth and development of small and diverse companies that are vital to the strength of the local and regional economy.

For applications, go to www.winstonsalem.com/minorityscholarship.aspx. They must be returned by Aug. 15.

Food Lion to expand Dunn distribution center

Food Lion will expand its distribution center in Dunn, the supermarket chain's parent company, Delhaize America, said Monday.

The company will add about 54,000 square feet to increase storage space for refrigerated and frozen foods. After the expansion the facility will have about 1.3 million square feet.

"Food Lion is proud to expand its business in North Carolina and in the Dunn community," said Cathy Green Burns, the president of Food Lion. "Today's announcement reinforces our commitment to North Carolina and enables us to continue to serve our customers in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic states."

The expanded refrigerated and frozen-foods section at the distribution center will provide additional storage for more than 4,000 dairy, meat and frozen food products.

The distribution center in Dunn opened in 1987 and services 264 Food Lion stores, primarily in North Carolina. More than 700 employees work there. It was struck by a tornado this spring and has since resumed full grocery operations.

On average, the distribution center ships more than 1.4 million cases of products each week and houses 12,800 items.

Food Lion expects to open the center's expanded space in early 2012.

Three behavioral-health groups win waiver OK

The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services said that Crossroads Behavioral Healthcare in Elkin and two other community behavioral-health organizations have received approval to operate under the state's 1915 (b)/(c) Medicaid Waiver program starting in January 2013.

The other organizations are Pathways in Gastonia and Mental Health Partners in Hickory. Pathways submitted an application to the state on behalf of all three agencies in May.

The goals of North Carolina's move to this waiver program include improving access to public mental health, substance abuse, and developmentally disability services; and giving consumers and families more options.

Of the seven requests for applications submitted to the state, including the joint application by Pathways, Crossroads and Mental Health Partners, three passed the review processes.

The three agencies plan to merge into a yet-to-be-named managed-care organization by July 1, 2012, and have processes in place to start managing the Medicaid Waiver by January 2013. Their new service area reaches from the Virginia border in Surry County to the South Carolina border in Gaston and Cleveland counties.

The combined organizations will serve eight counties — Burke, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Surry and Yadkin.

For details about North Carolina's transition to the 1915 (b)/(c) Medicaid Waiver, go to www.ncdhhs.gov/mhddsas/waiver.
