CHARLOTTE -- Celgard LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Polypore International Inc., said yesterday that it will create 289 jobs and spend $91 million on expanded and new infrastructure in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties over the next five years.
The company develops and makes specialty membranes used predominantly in the lithium-battery industry. The expansion will increase production capacity to supply lithium-battery manufacturers focused on the Electric Drive Vehicle industry.
Celgard plans to add 80 jobs to its Charlotte work force of 390. It will build a plant in Concord and create 209 jobs by the end of 2014. The overall average wage for the 289 new jobs will be $56,960 not including benefits.
In August, Celgard was selected for a grant of $49 million from the U.S. Energy Department for this expansion, assisted by the North Carolina congressional delegation.
Celgard said it is eligible for up to $18.6 million in incentives from the N.C. Job Development Investment Grant and the One North Carolina Fund.
