Targacept Inc. said yesterday it has received its second large grant from the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in the past seven months.
It received a $304,000 grant to assist in financing a project targeting a Parkinson's disease biomarker with its neuronal nicotinic-receptor research. Targacept specializes in developing drug compounds for treating central nervous system diseases and disorders.
Daniel Yohannes, the company's director of drug discovery, will lead the research.
Disease biomarkers are distinctive biological features or changes that are consistently different in people with Parkinson's disease as compared with people without Parkinson's disease. Identifying one or more disease biomarkers could allow researchers to diagnose earlier, track disease progression and identify appropriate subjects for clinical trials.
In July, Targacept received a grant worth more than $600,000 to assisting in preclinical research involving the use of compounds that modulate neuronal nicotinic receptors to control some forms of abnormal involuntary movements, known as dyskinesias.
