CHARLOTTE -- GMAC Financial Services is eliminating 115 jobs as it closes two offices in North Carolina, The Charlotte Observer reported yesterday.
The company told state officials this week that it is closing offices in SouthPark and near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Spokeswoman Gina Proia said that the call center and collections work done at those offices is being transferred to larger GMAC operations.
Last March, state and local officials approved more than $4.5 million in incentives to persuade GMAC to expand in Charlotte. In return, the company said it planned to add 200 jobs over two years.
Another wave of job cuts has hit the Winston-Salem operations of GMAC Inc., with at least 22 employees being let go in January.
Some former employees who contacted the Winston-Salem Journal said that other local cuts made since October cumulatively account for at least 100 workers. The workers asked not to be identified for fear of losing their severance packages.
The local operations are in the process of being sold as part of GMAC's U.S. consumer property-casualty insurance business, a transaction announced Oct. 19. The principal buyer is American Capital Acquisition Corp., a unit of American Capital Partners LLC of Hauppauge, N.Y.
