SANFORD -- The U.S. Labor Department said Thursday that former Hanesbrands Inc. employees in Sanford are eligible for benefits under the Trade Adjustment Assistance Act.
Also eligible are workers at Guilford Performance Textiles in Greensboro, Flextronics International USA in Durham and Baker Furniture in Connelly Springs.
Hanesbrands said in September that it was closing its yarn-making plant in Lee County, eliminating 150 jobs. The company blamed the recession and other factors for the need to reduce yarn production.
Hanesbrands also closed warehouses in Advance and Clemmons as part of a move to outsource yard production.
Workers covered by the latest trade-assistance act certifications will be contacted by the state with instructions on how to apply for individual benefits and services.
Workers age 50 and older can choose to receive Re-Employment Trade Adjustment Assistance. If a worker obtains new employment at wages of less than $55,000 a year -- and also less than the wages at the previous job -- the program will pay 50 percent of the difference between the old wage and the new wage, up to $12,000 over two years.
