Martin Marietta Composites Inc. is shutting down Sparta plant

SPARTA — Martin Marietta Composites Inc. said yesterday that it is closing its manufacturing plant in Sparta, eliminating 40 jobs. The employees will receive severance packages.

Martin, based in Raleigh, produced construction aggregates at the plant, such as pedestrian-bridge decks, commercial-truck trailers and ballistic and blast resistant panels.

Anne Lloyd, the chief financial officer of the company, said that it is discontinuing production of the products as well as shutting the plant.

"There was just not enough demand for our world-class, high-tech products in this economy to continue to run the plant," Lloyd said.

Martin took over the 185,000-square-foot plant in 2003 — about 16 months after Bristol Compressors closed its operations. At its peak, Martin had about 120 employees in Sparta.
