Anthony Scott plans to start off the new year in business.
He will open Club CO2 on New Year's Eve in the former Club Odyssey at 4019 Country Club Road.
Scott said that CO2 will cater to everyone, but he wanted to open a club in the tradition of Club Odyssey, which welcomed gays, lesbians, bisexual and transgender people.
"I'm not just going to open the doors for gay people or just open the doors for straight people," he said.
He thought about calling his business Club Odyssey II but went with CO2.
"I wanted a fresh, new start," he said.
CO2 is Scott's first business.
"I'm excited and I'm nervous," he said.
What helps is his support team. When he decided to open his club, he asked friends for help.
"I have had probably 15 to 20 volunteers bring their professional skills," he said of renovations he is doing.
He said he has done major upgrades, including adding several flat-screen TVs with cable and sports channels. He has also re-covered the pool tables and plans to soundproof the building by late February.
He said he wanted to open the club primarily for the customers of the former Club Odyssey, which closed in mid-November.
"People were devastated," he said. "They didn't want Club Odyssey to close. The customer base that was out there felt like they didn't have anyplace else to go."
Scott said there are several clubs in Greensboro for the gay and lesbian community, but those he talked to wanted something closer to their homes in the Winston-Salem area.
Scott said that one of his missions for CO2 is to give back to the community in the form of charitable events, including food drives and helping shelters for battered women.
"We're all about the community," he said.
