Bigger Deacon shop opens at Hanes Mall offering more items, more space for shoppers

Wake Forest University has expanded its store at Hanes Mall.

The Deacon Shop at Hanes Mall has added 600 square feet.

Buz Moser, the university's executive director of business services, said that now the store has more new styles of merchandise, including Nike T-shirts, hats and jerseys for men and women.

More space also means more room for shoppers. The store also offers home goods, artwork and children's apparel.

"We're not finished," Moser said. "We're moving into it, and we'll make some tweaks and get some feedback from our customers."

The Deacon Shop is a partnership between University Stores, which consists of all Wake Forest University stores, and the WFU Athletics Department.

Moser declined to give sales numbers but said that the university made the improvements because the Deacon Shop is a strong store.

"It's been a very solid investment for the university, but, more importantly, it has met the needs of our community," he said.

He said that customers tend to be Wakes Forest students, faculty, alumni and fans. But the store also attracts other folks, including people from out of town who are in the area for conventions and tournaments.

There is also a Deacon Shop at WFU and another at Reynolda Village on Reynolda Road.

Closeouts and more

Ollie's Bargain Outlet will open Sept. 8 in the former Harris Teeter at 5049 Country Club Road at Club Haven Shopping Center in Winston-Salem.

The store sells closeouts, surplus and salvage merchandise.

Kasey Kahne, a NASCAR driver, will be on hand for an autograph session that will start after a grand opening ceremony at 10 a.m. The distribution of 250 autograph tickets will begin at 7:30 a.m.

Hair and nails

LaShanda France has opened The FIXX Hair & Nail Salon in downtown Winston-Salem.

The FIXX is in the former Pip Printing and Document Services building at 235 Town Run Lane, off Second Street across from the post office.

The salon offers hair coloring, men and women's haircuts, Japanese thermal straightening, relaxers and advanced permanent waves. It also has nail, pedicure and waxing services.

France said that her business focuses on providing quality service in an upscale environment.

She plans to have eight stylists and two nail technicians.

New florist

Creative Designs of Winston-Salem has opened in the former Bud Smith's Flowers shop at the corner of First Street and South Hawthorne Road near Academy of Dance Arts Inc. Arthur "Bud" Smith, 84, retired June 30 after working more than 70 years in the flower industry.

Creative Designs is a full-service florist that sells flowers, home decor items, plants, balloons, gift items, fruit baskets and a line of jewelry called Just Jewelry.

Dawn Cox-Lawson of Mount Airy and Debbi Collins of Tobaccoville are the owners. Cox-Lawson is also the owner of the original Creative Designs in Mount Airy, and Collins is the dean of the Millennium Charter Academy middle school in Mount Airy.

The shop will have an open house Sept. 7-11.
