Vaughan Bassett to reopen portion of former plant in Elkin, adding 40 jobs

Vaughan Bassett Furniture Co. said today that it plans to reopen a portion of its former Elkin manufacturing operations later this month, adding 40 jobs.

The company, based in Galax, Va., closed the plant and eliminated 400 jobs in late January.

The manufacturer, however, decided not to dispose of the equipment or the building at that time because it held out hope it would be able to re-use it at some point.

Wyatt Bassett, the president and chief executive of Vaughan-Bassett, said that the company's incoming orders are outpacing production at its Galax plant

"We're pleased that our business is strong enough to warrant this move," Bassett said.

"Our first step will be to assemble and finish selected pieces from all our collections at our Elkin factory. We will also machine some parts in our Elkin machine room to supplement our parts-making production in Galax."

The manufacturer said it would have about 40 employees at the Elkin plant by Sept. 30 and another 10 by Nov. 30.

Vaughan-Bassett officials said they expect some of the jobs will be filled by Vaughan-Bassett employees from the Elkin area who were transferred to Galax — an 80-mile roundtrip — after the Elkin plant was closed. They also expect to make new hires, as well as hire employees to fill the jobs being transferred from Galax.
