First Tennessee Bank is trying to raise its profile in Winston-Salem by moving its branch to the Five Points intersection.
The bank has applied for permission with the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to take over the former North Carolina headquarters site of First Community Bank at 2000 W. First St.
First Community, based in Bluefield, Va., has moved its N.C. headquarters to a former TriStone Community Bank branch at Jonestown Road as part of its purchase of TriStone earlier this year.
First Tennessee operates as a subsidiary of First Horizon National Corp. of Memphis. It has had a boutique branch for commercial and private-client customers in Winston Tower.
It has about $9.5 million in deposits in Forsyth County, which places it 17th out of the 20 banks that have a branch presence here, according to the latest data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.
John Fox, the executive vice president of the local office, said that the bank wants to move the branch to a more visible and accessible site.
It expects to open the branch, which has about 12,000 square feet, in early February.
Although there will be an ATM, the bank does not have plans to open a retail branch in Winston-Salem, Fox said. And it is considering keeping a presence in the downtown area.
