RALEIGH -- The owner of two gas stations in Yadkinville is being sued by the state's attorney general for overcharging customers in September 2008 in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike striking Texas's oil-refinery region.
Roy Cooper alleges in the lawsuit, filed yesterday in Wake County Superior Court, that LR&S Inc.'s Four Sisters Center gas station at 513 E. Main St. and Yadkinville Food Mart at 909 N. State St. raised their retail prices for gas from under $4 a gallon to as much as $5.679 a gallon within hours on Sept. 12.
The office said that the stations dropped prices later that day after media reports that they were price-gouging. Cooper is asking the court to order LR&S to pay refunds to consumers and civil penalties to the state.
Meanwhile, the owner of Irving Park BP in Greensboro has agreed to pay more than $5,400 in refunds and penalties to resolve allegations that it gouged customers by charging $5.199 a gallon for gas on Sept. 11 and 12. According to the office's investigation, the station located at 2009 N. Elm St. overcharged consumers by more than $430.
The office said it has gotten more than $56,000 in refunds, civil penalties and energy-assistance funds from gasoline price-gouging investigations. Among the stations affected by the investigation include The Corner Market gas station in Jefferson and Shell To Go in McLeansville.
