Continued soft consumer demand for its yarn products led to a fourth consecutive quarterly loss for Unifi Inc., the Greensboro manufacturer said today.
The company, which has its largest manufacturing operations in Yadkinville, said it had a loss of $9.5 million in its fourth quarter of 2009, which ended June 28.
By comparison, it posted net income of $771,000 in the fourth quarter of 2008.
The loss was triggered primarily by a 26 percent decline in sales to $139.8 million. Unifi also said its earnings were affected by a temporary increase in polyester raw materials prices caused by the curtailment of key production plants.
Unifi posted an earnings loss of 15 cents a share compared with earnings of 1 cent a year ago.
Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research had forecasted a 4 cent loss for the quarter.
