MOUNT AIRY -- A Mount Airy company says it may have to cut 40 workers after losing out on a $5.5 million contract to supply granite for the National Sept. 11th Memorial.
William Swift, the president of N.C. Granite Corp., said yesterday that his company was outbid by an Italian company.
Swift said that N.C. Granite's bid called for about 200,000 square feet of green granite for the benches, floor and fountains of the plaza attached to the memorial. He said that without the contract the company may have to get rid of 40 people in its stonecutting division. The company employs about 125 workers.
