■ Janet A. Tooze, an assistant professor of biostatistical sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, will be one of 10 people to receive the 2008 National Institute of Health Merit Award as a member of the Surveillance Measurement Error Group. This award recognizes researchers who have demonstrated superior competence and outstanding productivity in research endeavors.

■ Dr. L. Andrew Koman, a professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, has been elected president of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Koman, who has been on the faculty of Wake Forest University School of Medicine since 1981, also is a professor of pediatrics, the associate director for development and research for the Division of Surgical Sciences, and the director of the Hand Fellowship Program.

■ Eastridge Technology in Winston-Salem has been named the leading Local System Integrator for Microsoft's enterprise customers in the Greater Southeast District, which comprises North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. One of Eastridge's specialties is integrating new hardware and software into a customer's existing systems.

■ Shermin Ata has been elected the president of the American Institute of Architects, Piedmont Section, for 2009. Ata has been an associate of the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship, a business incubator in Greensboro, since late 2007.

Leadership Winston-Salem has offered community leadership-development programs in Forsyth County since 1985 and has more than 1,300 alumni.

■ The surgeons of Greensboro Ear Nose & Throat have opened the Greensboro Center for Facial Rejuvenation at 321 W. Wendover Ave. Services include medical skin care, microdermabrasion, Botox and filler injections, and laser treatments. Staff members at the center are Drs. Sera Jacob, Dwight Bates, David Shoemaker and Karol Wolicki.

■ Dale Wilson has opened Mr. Appliance of Central Piedmont, a full-service appliance-repair business. Mr. Appliance is an appliance-repair franchise system that provides residential and light commercial-appliance repair. Before investing in a Mr. Appliance franchise, Wilson gained 25 years of experience in appliance repair through work as a service technician. Joining Wilson in running the business, which is based in King, is Regina Burnett, who will help with customer service and office operations. The Mr. Appliance of Central Piedmont franchise will serve Forsyth and Stokes counties.

■ Robert L. "Bob" Fowler of Fowler & Fowler, Realtors in High Point has been honored by the N.C. Association of Realtors as the newest inductee into the association's Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes his leadership and outstanding service to the real-estate profession. Fowler has provided leadership to his local board, the High Point Regional Association of Realtors, since becoming a Realtor almost 35 years ago. Also, Kelly Marks of REMAX of Greensboro has received the Regional Service Award from the N.C. Association of Realtors. This honor recognizes one outstanding Realtor in each of nine regions in the state who has contributed to and continues to serve his or her local, state and national associations.

■ Don Alexander, the director of the Wilkes Economic Development Corp., will lead a panel discussion on best practices in economic development marketing during the November summit of CoreNet Global in Orlando. CoreNet is an international organization of corporate real-estate executives, site-location consultants, economic developers, and other corporate-service companies.

■ Trone, an advertising, public-relations and relationship-marketing agency in High Point, has been named the agency of record for the Boy Scouts of America's Old North State Council. Trone will focus its efforts primarily on the Boy Scouts of America's 100th-anniversary campaign. The campaign is expected to begin in August 2009 and run through 2010, the 100th-anniversary year.

■ Highwoods Properties Inc. was invited to ring the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange on Oct. 17 in recognition of the company's 30th anniversary. Buck Hargis, a property manager, was chosen to represent Highwoods Triad Division, based in Greensboro.

Hargis is originally from Livingston, Tenn., but moved to Winston-Salem in 1987. He has been with Highwoods since 2000.

■ Four new members have been inducted into the American Furniture Hall of Fame by the American Furniture Hall of Fame Foundation in High Point. The inductees are Alfred J. Audi, the former president of L. & J.G. Stickley; Wogan S. Badcock Jr., the former president of W.S. Badcock Corp.; K. Bruce Lauritsen, the former chief executive of Flexsteel Industries; and Pasquale Natuzzi, the founder, chairman and chief designer of the Natuzzi Group.

■ The International Economic Development Council has presented an award to the High Point Economic Development Corp. for its 2007 Annual Report, "High Point: Leading the nation in attracting new industry." Loren Hill is the president of the High Point Economic Development Corp.

■ Princeton Marketing Group, a marketing and advertising agency in Greensboro, celebrates its 10-year anniversary. The company has clients throughout the United States. Its specialized niche offerings include: brand development, marketing consultation and strategic planning, advertising, corporate-identity branding and campaign development. Principal owners Monte Brackett and Laurie Panas Brackett started the business in 1998.
