Massachusetts adds $1 to cigarette excise tax

BOSTON - The excise tax on a pack of cigarettes in Massachusetts will jump by $1 under a bill signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick on Tuesday. The tax goes into effect immediately.

The increase brings Massachusetts' cigarette tax to $2.51 a pack. New York has the highest cigarette tax in the nation at $2.75 a pack.
